DeSantis seeks wins on guns, abortion before facing Trump in 2024

DeSantis has yet to make a final decision on a presidential run, those close to him told Reuters. But he is reaching out to potential staff and donors, raising money, and traveling around the country to raise his profile.

Those efforts include installing hand-picked loyalists like Collins in the Republican-controlled state legislature who could then help ensure passage of proposals on guns, abortion and other Republican red-meat issues, they told Reuters, providing DeSantis with a strong record of conservative wins.

DeSantis has said he would sign a bill to ban abortions as early as six weeks if passed by lawmakers. He signed a bill last year banning abortions after 15 weeks.

He also continues to push back hard on what he sees as efforts to impose a liberal agenda in public schools. Last month, he said Florida would not allow an Advanced Placement high school course in African American studies, contending the curriculum would indoctrinate students on “queer theory.”

Such efforts are aimed at bolstering what would likely be the central theme of DeSantis’ presidential campaign: that he has transformed Florida into the most prosperous conservative-leaning state in the country.

"We have articulated a vision for a free and prosperous state," DeSantis said at his second inauguration last month. "We have, through persistence and hard work, executed on that vision."

But, he added, "We are far from done."

DeSantis' hard-right stance on issues such as guns and abortion risks alienating the suburban voters he eventually would need to win the presidency in 2024.

For now, allies say his actions are primed to win the primary over Trump, and he’ll worry about a general election later.

DeSantis has pointed to his mammoth re-election victory as validation of his approach.

“That verdict has been rendered,” he said

DeSantis has had a heavily Republican majority legislature since his first day in office.

Very true. Add the LGBT issue near the top as well. But I'd always prefer to vote for someone with hard-right stances, when given the choice. Not just for any one election, but because if those hard-right choices ever go away, they may never come back.

[DeSantis has had a heavily Republican majority legislature since his first day in office.]

It wasn’t a supermajority (2/3) before. It became one after 2022.

Whether it’s a conservative majority, we’ll find out when the bills come up for a vote. Fact is many of the swing districts in which he won signed up for some of his agenda, but not all of it.

The man thinks massive vote fraud does not exist. He has no intention of stopping it. He only piddles around the edges looking for a one off case here and there. I will not vote for anyone who thinks the current system is legit. Because everything is lost if the system is not changed to make elections honest again.

Everything he is doing he would do anyway. He just is whipping leglistors, suddenly wants to start up the migrant flights up again, getting in good with dominion, selling a book and going on tour, lining up donors and staffers. It is just a huge coincidence. /s

This system is every changing and has been since
Columbus sailed the ocean blue in 1492. Think
back thru history and the changes that have
occurred either for good or bad. The world
is changing and so are the rulers. We have
our appointed time and others come aboard.
Such is life but it is also reality.

Yes, because not voting really helps change the system, FFS. 4 more years of Biden thanks to folks just like you.

You think that helps stop the slide over the cliff?

The author is stating as fact, that which is conjecture? O.K. maybe he is. But what about this statement of yours? “everything he’s doing (i.e. DeSantis) he would be doing whether he enters the race or not”.

“there goes that evil globalist desantis doing evil things to floridians again...”

And there you go again misrepresenting what’s being alleged. Nobody’s alleging DeSantis is doing evil things to Floridians. Some of us are questioning his motives. How much of what DeSantis does is because of conviction and how much is because he’s being advised, and more importantly, being allowed to do it? If you’re unwilling to honestly ask yourself that question, you’re giving the uniparty all it needs to fool you.

I already told you yesterday, DeSantis IS my governor. And I’m not concerned about him as governor. I’m concerned about him as a potential presidential candidate.
