Taking prisoners requires using personnel to guard them and resources to feed and house them. Killing them frees up personnel and resources.

If you are the invaded party, it makes no sense to take prisoners.

Got it. Bullets are cheaper than guards, cells and food. Just shoot them and let 'em bloat.
