Polls at this point are pure name ID. Like polls before the 2016 primary putting Jeb Bush in first and Chris Christie in second... it meant nothing other than nationwide Republican voters knew their names more than anyone else's when the poll was taken before the primary campaign really got going.
Yup what the political junkies here and elsewhere need to realize is a large portion of the population are nowhere near as tuned in as they are and often only have a vague idea of whats happening even on the Presidential stage. These people will have no real clue as to what the ideology or the positions of candidates are and often simply vote based on name recognition alone. Trump benefits from this in the primary because being a showman the media can’t stop reporting on his antics so he’s effectively hogged the limelight for an entire election cycle and pushed all other republicans out.
Unfortunately this is a double edged sword in the general. You’re no longer dealing with disengaged Repubs who will vote for the Repub with the most name recognition. You’re dealing with the even more disengaged even more ignorant general election voter. While 2016 the average ignorant voter knew nothing about Trump other than a vague association of Trump = wacky outsider. The media learned its lesson and nowadays the average ignorant voter knows nothing about Trump other than Trump = racist sexist homophobic transphobic badman.
