Gonzalez, who became the center of an international custody battle at 5 years old, was nominated Sunday to Cuba's National Assembly.
Elian Gonzalez, the Cuban national whose precarious boyhood arrival in the U.S. in 1999 prompted a fierce international custody battle, is set to become a lawmaker. Gonzalez was nominated by his local municipal assembly on Sunday to serve in Cuba's National Assembly...
Gonzlaez was en route to Florida with his mother when their boat capsized on Thanksgiving 1999 and she and other migrants drowned. The boy's fate thereafter became a flashpoint in U.S.-Cuba relations.
His father, a waiter named Juan Miguel who had remained in Cuba, famously fought for his son's return. Distant relatives in Miami, however launched a legal battle to keep the boy in the U.S.--and feared Gonzalez would become a political pawn of Cuban dictator Fidel Castro.
U.S. immigration officials eventually decided to place Gonzalez in the custody of his father, which the boy's family refused to accept. A nighttime raid in April 2000 saw federal agents storm the house where Gonzalez was staying, spurring protests and counter-demonstrations.
Gonzalez was flown home to Cuba after the Supreme Court rejected the effort to keep him in the U.S. The island nation celebrated the return of Gonzalez, who later said the government bodyguards ordered to protect him had become some of his closest friends.
Castro himself was a guest of honor at Gonzalez's seventh birthday back home. In 2013, Gonzalez told state-run media that the Cuban leader was "like a ship that knew to take his crew on the right path". He would later profess that Castro had become a father figure for him, and held back tears when the bearded authoritarian died in 2016...

Everything his mother did in sacrificing her very life in getting him to freedom was undone by the evil Clintoon Crime Family and Janet Reno’s stormtroopers. Sick, sad and disgusting.
He'll probably do better than Harry who got a smaller bedroom and one smaller banger when he was growing up.
A low point in our history, exceeded by many lower points since.
I’ve seen that photo of the swat guy with the AR15 and the terrified looking Elian Gonzales but I never noticed Elian was coming out of the closet.
After that, why would he ever want to come back to this country?
“Distant relatives in Miami, however launched a legal battle to keep the boy in the U.S.—and feared Gonzalez would become a political pawn of Cuban dictator”
Well look at that!
“That picture was a “Coming Attractions” trailer for Deep State Productions. It hasn’t gotten any better. ”
Very much so.
His father, a waiter named Juan Miguel who had remained in Cuba, famously fought for his son’s return.
___________
Not really, the father was ordered to do that!
He was sending messages that he wants his son to stay in the USA.
Fidel made Elian a symbol. That made Elian rich and famous in Cuba. So he is now doing great over there, unlike of most of his compatriots!
I remember there was a pic of him wearing a Florida Gators shirt.
Fidel was his dad, for all intents and purposes.
Will never forget that image. Poor kid.
I am sure she is rotting in hell right now.
Remember it well…
Send them to Cuba. They’ll swim home.
5 year old Cuban kid is treated like a high profile terrorist.
Now the same party welcomes MS-13 gang members with welcome arms.
Disagreed with Freepers then, and disagree now. Sorry, “distant relatives” opinion / interest vs his biological fathers interests.
I must support the biological father in this case (Commie or not)
Fidel was his father.
You nailed it.
Unfortunately.
We're hosed
Harry is a mess. He was bred only for “spare parts” in case Wm needed any. Billy has the hotter wife and the only thing The Heir needs is more hair on top but Prince Henry er Harry is a bit shy in that compartment also, and it is “red”! OMG! wasn’t Di’s riding instructor a ginger or carrot top?
What? no way, have i been under a rock?
Thank you,
Dan
