Luke 3:10—
Even tax collectors came to be baptized and they said to him,
“Teacher, what should we do?”
He answered them,
“Stop collecting more than what is prescribed.”
Soldiers also asked him,
“And what is it that we should do?”
He told them,
“Do not practice extortion,
do not falsely accuse anyone,
and be satisfied with your wages.
Tax collectors were hated in biblical times and were regarded as sinners. They were worked for the Romans, so this made them traitors. People resented paying taxes to the foreigners who ruled over them. bbc.com

It certainly hasn’t changed. All the above pretty much applies to where we are today.
Whoever came up with the vile idea of taxing the fruits from the labor of a man’s hands has got to have a special place in hell.
