US skiers to don climate change-themed race suits at worlds

Looking cool is just the tip of the iceberg for Mikaela Shiffrin, Travis Ganong and the rest of the U.S. ski team when they debut new race suits at the world championships.

Even more, they want everyone thinking about climate change.

The team’s predominantly blue-and-white suits depict an image of ice chunks floating in the ocean. It's a concept based on a satellite photo of icebergs breaking due to high temperatures. The suit was designed in collaboration with Kappa, the team’s technical apparel sponsor, and the nonprofit organization Protect Our Winters (POW).

The Americans will wear the suits throughout the world championships in Courchevel and Meribel, France, which start Monday with a women’s Alpine combined race and end Feb. 19.

“Although a race suit is not solving climate change, it is a move to continue the conversation and show that U.S Ski & Snowboard and its athletes are committed to being a part of the future,” said Sophie Goldschmidt, the president and CEO of U.S. Ski & Snowboard.

Global warming has become a cold, hard reality in ski racing, with mild temperatures and a lack of snow leading to the postponement of several World Cup events this winter.

“I’m just worried about a future where there’s no more snow. And without snow, there’s no more skiing,” said Ganong, who grew up skiing at Lake Tahoe in California. “So this is very near and dear to me."

What alarms Ganong is seeing the stark year-to-year changes to some of the World Cup circuit's most storied venues.

You dont have to be smart to be on the USST.

While genius Ganong is in France at my favorite ski area, massive snow storms are still dumping on Tahoe which is now at 200% of normal snowpack.

This is the third round of heavy snow years in the last 7 years. It’s wetter/colder in the Sierras then it was in ‘70s.

So what the hell are these twerps talking about?

Do any of these people realize where synthetic fabrics come from? Shouldn't they all be wearing wool, cotton or other "all natural" "non-gmo" blends of fabric... such as canvas treated with vegetable derived oils and greases.?

I like to ski. I enjoy watching skiing, except that snowboard crap. I don’t like causes and politics mixed with any sport. The last thing I want is to be preach to when watching anything entertaining. Fortunately, I don’t have cable to watch sports. It will be easy for me to boycott this BS. I have other ways to entertain myself.

Whew! That’s a relief to hear. Now all the climate change problems will just disappear. Why didn’t someone think of this earlier?

Now that this imaginary problem has been solved, can we just do away with all the climate change hysteria and move on to something else?

Guess they haven't heard that it was -46.9F at the top of Mt. Washington in New Hampshire on Friday.

Oh wait, I forgot. Record cold temps are ALSO indicative of "globull warming".

Such nonsense should not be minimized. It would be like if the skiers wore “1+1 = 3” on their race suits.

Everyone knows that 1+1 does not equal 3. But by golly, if you see 1+1 = 3 often enough, you’ll start to believe it. And you’ll teach it to your kids.

There is, however, an upside to this race suit nonsense. The Chinese will find it very amusing.

It's wetter/colder in the Sierras then it was in ‘70s.

If one excludes data from ground-based weather recording stations that are located in the middle of large urban areas. North America has been cooling for at least the past 20 years. The same is true in many other locations such as China and Russia.
