The CONELRAD stations were there to give citizens advance warning of an imminent attack concerning things like this.

&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&

I’m pretty sure the two CONELRAD radio stations on the AM dial were not intended for advance warning.

The CONELRAD stations, if I’m not mistaken, were intended to complicate navigation for enemy bombers. Instead of having hundreds of radio stations, each with its own frequency that a bomber could home in on, all civilian radio stations would transmit only on the two CONELRAD frequencies.

Hence the name CONtrol of ELectronic RADiation.

Part of what they did was for disallowing attacks aircraft to hone in on radio signals. But it was also used to transmit information to the public. And we were talking about what the public was aware of.

“CONELRAD (Control of Electromagnetic Radiation) was a method of emergency broadcasting to the public of the United States in the event of enemy attack during the Cold War. It was intended to allow continuous broadcast of civil defense information to the public using radio stations, while rapidly switching the transmitter stations to make the broadcasts unsuitable for Soviet bombers that might attempt to home in on the signals (as was done during World War II, when German radio stations, based in or near cities, were used as beacons by bomber pilots).”
