We must assume it is transmitting whatever data it collects in any manner.
I’d prefer capturing and analyzing, so the sooner the better since it must be assumed it is transmitting.

I was watching it on plane finder and flightaware just past Macon, GA last night heading SSE but now it is gone.
If they do not take this thing down when it gets over the water, we know we are under the control of the Commies.
Why not collect the balloon(s) with one of those slow-flying planes with the vee shaped contraption on the front. This will allow examination of the payload. If there is a viral payload as some suspect, this may prevent it from being disbursed.

according to the Canadians, there may be a possible ‘second’ balloon over Canadian airspace (which would make the one over Latin America number three). Of note, the balloon isn’t just breezing along with the wind, it appears to have ‘hovering’ capability. Perhaps unrelated maybe related, an actor, Julian Sand, went missing while hiking last month. Authorities have tried to track him via RECCO. I don’t know if RECCO can read data, but if the Chinese balloons are collecting data, it makes one wonder the extent of the data they’re collecting. “RECCO technology can detect RECCO reflective material, electronics, & in some cases, credit cards...” Pardon me while I faraday my phone and credit cards and don my tin foil hat :).
