The population of polar bears was was estimated at 5,000 to 10,000 in the 1970s. Today, the number of polar bears is estimated at 22,000 to 31,000. The 1973 International Agreement on the Conservation of Polar Bears and the resulting significant reductions in hunting of polar bears is largely responsible for those gains.
Polar bears are hypercarnivorous apex predators and the largest extant land carnivore. The environment will not support dense populations of such predators. Therefore, polar bears are non-territorial, and live solitary lives, except for mating season, and the two years a sow spends raising her cubs.
Polar bears are stealth hunters who mostly rely upon their superb sense of smell. While fearless, well fed polar bears avoid humans and rarely attack unless they are provoked.
Unfortunately, most polar bears are hungry at any given time, and humans are just another species of prey, although one with low caloric value compared to their regular diet.
Unlike other bears who may attack, maul, their victim, and then leave, polar bear attacks on humans are predatory, usually fatal, and they will consume their victim.
The earth’s climate is always changing, human beings, indeed all of life, is neither the cause of, nor has any effect on climate change.
