A quarter of GOP say they'd back Trump as independent in 2024, threatening to split vote: Poll

More than a quarter of Republican voters say they’d back former President Donald Trump in the 2024 election even if he runs as a third-party candidate — possibly threatening to split the GOP electorate as the party seeks to win back the White House.

As the 2024 primary field begins to take shape, a majority of Republican voters are seeking to move past Trump and elevate another candidate as their party’s nominee. However, nearly 30% of “Always Trumpers” may be standing in their way, according to a new poll from the Bulwark.

“A large majority of GOP voters is ready to move on from Donald Trump. But a devoted minority might not let them,” said Sarah Longwell, who conducted the poll. “This is the 'Always Trump' faction of the Republican party. And they are why the GOP could be sleepwalking into another Donald Trump catastrophe.”

In a series of hypothetical matchups between Trump and other potential Republican candidates, polling shows the former president is fading with GOP voters at large. In a crowded primary field between Trump and nine of the party’s top contenders, the former president garnered roughly 28% of the vote — coming in below Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who clinched 39%, according to the poll.

I wish that some member of FR would get this thread directly to Trump. He needs a good resource where he can find out directly how the country feels and expects about his run in 33/34. I’m not savvy with computers. This is the only place where conservatives can freely reveal their thoughts about politics.

Please get this thread directly to Trump. He needs to see the thoughts of the people who have voted and will vote for him again.

You mean like if the majority of voters think he’s too old and too stubborn on the vaxx and they all vote for someone like DeSantis in the primary? Those seem like reasonable conclusions for who people might choose as their candidate, and they wouldn’t be too happy with a “sore loserman” sabotaging the general election at that point.

if he is allowed to run in the primary fine, who ever wins wins that’s politics

but...

if they try some trick to keep him out, all bets are off

I can’t see how using *EVERY* ethical technique to get every possible Republican ballot can possibly be wrong.

Vote by mail and ‘ballot harvesting’ are not going away. Eventually we had better count on pretty much every Democrat who can legally doing so voting. Not doing everything THEY are doing is like saying “well, we won’t use artillery or air strikes in this war”; times have changed, adapt or die.

A party that can’t win with 100 percent turnout deserves to expire on the dustbin of history.

That’s a problem because there are a lot of Republicans in DC who would prefer to lose the WH than to have PDJT back in it.

Sadly, not only in DC.

Adults or dolts?

Would you vote for Schwarznegger? Being willing to settle for any evil, provided that there is one that is even worse, seems a recipe to get to hell pretty quick.

I did vote for each of the Bushes, once. Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me.

Why are you providing the dumbest example on earth. Figures you’d use a guy not born in the country.

Would you vote for him for governor of California? He effectively euthenized the Republican Party. McCain and Romney would have eviscirated the party.

I’d probably rather have Arnold than Romney or McCain. At least, as you observe, he is mostly dumb, although chalk a quarter or so up to being married to a Kennedy.

The one thing Republicans can sort of do is say no to a Democratic prsident sometimes. At least McCain and Romney gave us that.

Well, I don’t know if I would vote for him. California? I would never live in that dumb state. But you can go back in time all you want, you have to look at 2024 and see who’s going to be the candidate. Trump really would’ve been a good president if he’d shut his damn mouth.

While I agree that it would be good if he could keep his mouth shut and, alsnt o if he could pick decentsubordinates, I’d say he is argaubly the second best president (after Reagan) since Ike.

I’d say he’s better than Reagan. But just has impulse control problems.

If so, I’ll vote for Trump as a third party candidate.

***********

Works for me. I have practice & experience going 3rd party, which I chose to do in 2004, 2008, & 2012 because the candidates sucked.

I’m a RIRO- Republican In Registration Only.

The only chance anti Trump Republicans have, is if DeSantis runs. Plus they will also need a field that isn’t crowded.(Trump should get some stalking horses ready)

If DeSantis plays it smart and sits out, you’ll see an Orange Semi running over little possums on his way to the nomination.
