“… That non-replication part is important. For artificial cells to be useful, they need to be carefully controlled, and that can’t happen as easily if they’re propagating in the same way that actual cells do.…”

Hmmm… I see an OPPORTUNITY FOR GAIN OF FUNCTION efforts.
*shakes head*
Hmmmm, quasi-living cells that can’t replicate on their own. We used to call those a “virus”.
That non-replication part is important.
For artificial cells to be useful,
THEY NEED TO BE CAREFULLY CONTROLLED,
and that can’t happen as easily if they’re propagating in the same way that actual cells do.
the above Im sure has already happened but they are not telling you. This research is not to benefit us
Sounds great. What could possibly go wrong? Better start mass production.
Let it communicate through ChatGPT and we could be in trouble. It could program itself to override any protections.
I could see this developing into something that demands worship.
It reminds me of this brief exchange in Jurassic Park:
Dr. Ian Malcolm: If there is one thing the history of evolution has taught us it's that life will not be contained. Life breaks free, it expands to new territories and crashes through barriers, painfully, maybe even dangerously, but, uh... well, there it is.John Hammond: [sardonically] There it is.
Henry Wu: You're implying that a group composed entirely of female animals will... breed?
Dr. Ian Malcolm: No. I'm, I'm simply saying that life, uh... finds a way.
Yeah. This is going to end well. Uh huh. I’m no Luddite, but c’mon.
I'm thinking more like bacteria, but same idea. Cyborg infections that antibiotics are powerless to stop.
It amazes me how suicidal we are as a species.
Where have you gone, Dr. Fauci . . . a nation turns its lonely eyes to you. Boo, hoo, hoo . . .

Ping
More gain-of-function “opportunities” - and they will try the “let-them-replicate” route “just for giggles...”
I think a really good idea would be to finance a chicom biolab to do some research on this for us.
No boundaries, the science/medical community does whatever it wants to do.
I can’t imagine what this world will be like in 10 years....maybe just 5. I think we saw some of the ramifications with Covid. They wont stop.
