I speculated something similar a number of weeks back, starting with the question "why risk WW3 and nukes over a place with no national interest?".
Well, when you have elements in the government infrastructure with their proverbial "hand in the cookie jar", and think of the mindset involved, some of those elements do the calculus and risk toughing it out than face the executioner's squad. Additionally, by embroiling the US in a war, they can 'rally 'round the flag', and given the current climate, use it as an excuse to go after those domestic elements that aren't too keen on what is going on. In fact, don't be surprised to see crap thrown out about Russian subversion in the US, maybe even the persecution of Congresspersons.
IMHO, those elements I have mentioned do NOT have the interests of the US in mind. In fact, they'll be on a full court press to rig 2024. They can't afford not to. In hand with that, I would be on the lookout for 'domestic pacification' efforts as well.
