And he wasn't that good an actor, either. In MASH, he was merely a caricature of himself (as he perceived himself to be). He struck a chord with the audiences because at that point, all things "rebel", were good. That's what the cool kids did.

But at the end of the day, he's just another flake who wears make-up and plays make believe for a living.
