US politics and culture have turned into a s***show, granted, but your own reactions to that are part of the collateral damage of the decadent state of the US.
It is indeed a bit like the communists of mid-century. The US had become the global economic and military powerhouse, the standard of living of its people was multiples of what it was twenty years earlier, the entire world was getting vastly better off - and the communists called it a disaster, creating a rejection narrative.
