Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky has rejected the prospect of peace talks with Vladimir Putin while dismissing his Russian counterpart Thursday as a “nobody.”

Zelensky used an interview with Britain’s Sky News to declare Putin “doesn’t want negotiations because he doesn’t want peace.”

The Ukrainian leader said he was “convinced” Ukraine was “just the first step” for Putin, who has his eye on “other countries” as he seeks Eastern European domination.

Quit trying to compare everything to WWII. Times and situations are not the same.

Why strive for peace when you have the backing of NATO and its resources at your disposal?

Times and situations are not the same? Let’s see how they compare. Both are about an expansionist totalitarian regimes invading sovereign neighboring countries to conquer territories that they claim are theirs by right. Seems the same to me.

Peace means Russia quits its invasion and (again) recognizes the independence of Ukraine.

There really isnt another option from the Ukrainian point of view. It is win, or submit. There is nothing in between, other than fig-leaves.

Can Ukraine win on their own?

No. Russia has at least 3X the military potential of Ukraine. Thats why Ukraine has supporters, because everyone else on the continent is, individually, inferior to Russia. They must stand together or fall separately.

Its the same for any smaller state with a bigger neighbor.

Lucky if they even arrive by end of March....Nuland says will be a year before ducks in a row to use them. Getting them inland thru Ukraine a logistics issue plus maintenance, instructors and operators.

I’d go back and look at all of Putin’s speeches. He had been very clear; and I would stay away from injecting any personal interpretation on nation’s defense strategy. Listen to what each side is saying. It’s not rocket science.

But it is BESTMAPS, the acronym used for strategic military analysis.

How is that strange? Mexico and Canada don’t dictate what the US National Defense strategy is, nor should they. Neighboring countries can have opinions, but Russia is the only nation that determines what it can/cannot tolerate.

How many small countries can win a conventional war against larger invading nations without outside aid? The only other option would be a bloody 10 to 20 year insurgency. Is that what you wish for?

Can Russia win on its own? Obviously, not. They import weapons from Third World Countries and exports keep their petro economy from cratering.

There is really nothing to negotiate until Putin accepts that Ukraine is not part of Russia and therefore Russia has no business setting Ukrainian policy. Russia will have to be making security guarantees to its neighbors to assure it does not invade any more of them.

You are probably correct an assessment and decision has been made by the powerful lunatics who are creating the global government that Russia needs to be bled bone dry.

“So we should have sought negotiations with Nazi Germany?”

Well, no, because, rightly or wrongly, the United States demanded unconditional surrender. That was a bit controversial back then, as it possibly led to more casualities.

““Negotiations” conducted in public are normally just dotting the i’s and crossing the t’s on basic agreements arrived at prior.”

Who said anything about public negotiations?

By all means listen to Putin’s speeches and read his writings. He has not been shy in stating his view that there is no such thing as a separate Ukrainian national identity, that it is just a fiction invented by the West to divide Russia, and that he has a mission to restore full sovereignty over “historical Russia.”

Correct.

He will lose. His ruse of offering peace negotiations have been used to take advantage of the situation on the ground.

If you wish to talk peace, simply move your troops back to Russia.

The US is not fundamentally inimical to Mexico or Canada, nor has it sought to control their economies. Not even when, for instance, Mexico repeatedly nationalized US investments there, including those in the petroleum industry.

Any mutual economic policy vis a vis Canada and Mexico were sought by Canada and Mexico, each seeking their own benefit.

With Russia it was otherwise, as this whole mess began because Ukraine was seeking EU (not NATO) membership. This was not seen as being to Russia’s benefit (I disagree, Russia had a lot to gain, if they had exercised a little imagination and seen it as win-win, not zero sum). Hence Russia and Russian proxies precipitated a crisis that played out on many levels, and here we are.

Basically the Russians are dicks. Character counts, even in development economics and grand strategy.
