I remember. I was there. I was in USAF EOD. We were told that if the flag dropped with USSR swarming Europe, our only hope to keep it from going nuclear was to keep our jets in the air.
It was our job to keep the runways open by clearing the thousands of area-denial bombs and bomblets that would certainly be there.
During exercises, it was obvious to us that we did not have the people or equipment to do the job and we would all be dead in the first hour the flag dropped.
I remember. But I see doom-day as being 100 times more likely today than then. For one thing our President is a cabbage. That is not a good thing when in a crisis.
I also see Austin and Blinker driving this thing and they are dangerously stupid. Last spring I saw Austin tell a press conference that our goal was to bleed Russia dry through the war. That is maybe OK as a goal but is crazy stupid to admit it in a press conference.
I remember, but I am more afraid than ever.

I had just been issued arctic gear and my gear was packed and by the front door, I assumed the 9th Infantry was going to Russia, my stepbrother was with the 82nd at the time and was actually parachuted up and sitting on the tarmac.
Since I was leaving the Army in about 2 months, newly married, and a big student of WWII, I was not looking forward to the Eastern front.

It was dangerous in the past because Russia had the means to attack and conquer Europe, they were already on Germany’s border and had over 6 million men ready to go, 7 Airborne Divisions, many bridge-building units, vast tank forces, and a vast Air force.
Today there is no reason for Russia to attack all of NATO and what used to be the Warsaw Pact, they can’t, they can’t even pretend they can, they have no forces to attack with.
The fear in the past was that Russia would attack and that as many millions of soldiers were involved in combat with wins and losses, at some point nuclear weapons would come into play. The prize was Europe and power over the world.
Today, the only fear is that for some odd reason, Russia decides to commit suicide and take the Western world with it, by emptying their silos, there is nothing to gain, no rich countries to win, no prize at the end, just the end of Russia and the Western world.
