I remember the section of William L. Shirer’s book The Rise And Fall of the Third Reich in which Hitler had operatives plant money and documents and receipts on opposition leaders and especially nuns and priests.
Then his captive press had headlines and lurid stories of the “guilt” of the “criminals” which most people believed. Those who didn’t were discouraged over it and bowed out of actively supporting Hitler’s enemies.
