It's still too early to predict with any confidence how this will pan out in the medium to long term. I've never seen any reasoned objection to a diversified energy budget, in which a range of 'renewable' technologies complement, without wholly replacing 'non-renewable' sources. Diversification is prudent in all forms of investment, including this one.

It sometimes seems that this is one of those issues in which FR gets trapped in obsessive dualism: A is better than B, therefore A is good and B is bad, therefore under no conceivable circumstances has B anything to offer, and the possibility that B could usefully complement A, with a consequent net gain, is not considered.
