Reuters) - Russia's new military reforms respond to possible NATO expansion and the use of Kyiv by the "collective West" to wage a hybrid war against Russia, the newly appointed general in charge of Russia's military operations in Ukraine said.

Valery Gerasimov, in his first public comments since his Jan. 11 appointment to the role, admitted also to problems with the mobilisation of troops, after public criticism forced President Vladimir Putin to reprimand the military.

The military reforms, announced mid-January, have been approved by Putin and can be adjusted to respond to threats to Russia's security, Gerasimov told the news website Argumenty i Fakty in remarks published late Monday.

"Today, such threats include the aspirations of the North Atlantic Alliance to expand to Finland and Sweden, as well as the use of Ukraine as a tool for waging a hybrid war against our country," said Gerasimov, who is also the chief of Russia's military general staff.

Finland and Sweden applied last year to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization after Russia invaded Ukraine.

Under Moscow's new military plan, an army corps will be added to Karelia in Russia's north, which borders with Finland.

NATO is weeks away from declaring open war on Russia. Glad all the warhawks here will get what they want.

Pure insanity. Guess the reset is coming one way or another.

Yet again I regret the inability to place wagers vs others in FR.

Nothing to wager, NATO is going direct very soon. Last Friday was a meeting of all the generals, and given the recent actions of Russia, well.. buckle up I guess.

That right there is the point of the wager. We differ in our crystal-ball-fu. No different from a sports bet.

NATO is weeks away from declaring open war on Russia.

Maybe that’s why the Swedes are ruining their country’s application to join NATO.

Maybe. I just know it’s getting extremely dumb out there and I warned about this. Idjits think they could just keep sending arms and money with no consequences.

NATO is weeks away from declaring open war on Russia.

Why, for what reason, purpose and end would NATO need to, in your view?

I was hoping to make it to spring.

Once Russia feels they have no options, nuclear torpedoes are coming.

Should have stayed on the west coast perhaps...

You have yourself a great night.

I can see quite obviously that I can’t expect anything resembling intelligence from your end, so I won’t bother wasting your time, or mine.

Oh I agree.

The Belgirod Russian sub has been spotted off our east coast.

Can hit the WH in 3-4 minutes with a nuclear torpedo.

And while they do that, along with the other 5 torpedoes, Russia will hit every NATI base they can, as quickly as they can.

I don’t take this lightly.

Have you read the fourth turning?

There is a lot to think about...though I didn’t know NATO was preparing.
The Poles have certainly been preparing for war.

I hope they don’t leave Ottawa out.

Most here don’t take these things seriously because Merica!

This was never going to end well with so many western countries sending arms and finances.

this is my take as well. air defense assets going on moscow roofs, warnings from pretty much every key russian official coordinated monday, etc. i don’t want to believe it but it has seemed likely for a year and seems unavoidable now.

i think in the risk/reward calculus of the west, they have enough trouble on their plate already that they see no downside and potentially lots of upside going hot. if background radiation levels go up, even better, can blame some other problems on that as well.

LOL

“In the 11 months since invading Ukraine, Russia has been shifting its rhetoric on the war from an operation to “denazify” and “demilitarise” its neighbour to increasingly casting it as defence from an aggressive West.”

I think they thought no one would care if they took Ukraine...
