Ukraine is fighting for all of us. Now Europe must fight Putin too
UK Guardian ^ | January 22, 203 | Simon Tisdall

Europe must fight. The realisation has been slow in coming. Yet almost one year after Russia invaded Ukraine, most western governments finally understand Kyiv’s war for survival is their war, too. It’s a fight to the death for Ukraine, but also for European democracy, rights and values. It’s a fight against the historical evils of fascism and imperialism embodied by Vladimir Putin, a dictator for our age.

Europe must fight. It really has no choice. As Russia doubles down, threatening a huge new offensive, a turning point approaches when tragedy turns to ruin – or triumph. This moment, when the war has become familiar and wearying, is the moment of maximum danger. From Sweden, Spain, the Netherlands, France, Poland and the Baltic republics, the flow of arms is turning into an urgent torrent.

“The ex-invaded Eastern European countries, including Ukraine, had been under Russian occupation for decades... they lived through hell under forced Russian/Soviet communist rule.”

You really don’t understand the formation of the Soviet Union at all.
Sad.

Ukraine was a constituent state and is an original founding member of the USSR. They were NOT an unwilling satellite state gobbled up and occupied post WW2 like Poland or Czech.

The Left never forgave Russia for abandoning Communism. They want it back.

Not true, the Bolsheviks ultimately overthrew the independent Ukraine Republic and moved it into the USSR.

True for Russia too, and not unique to Ukraine.

The outcome of the bolshevik revolution was the establishment of the Bolshevist Soviet republics in Russia proper, most of Ukraine, Belarus, Central Asia and Transcaucasia.

The Guardian's chest-thumping is directed at Germany for playing politics over sending Leopard tanks to Ukraine, when Ukraine is going to get those tanks no matter what Germany says. Ukraine needs tanks in numbers that it can use and maintain to keep up with newer Russian tanks like the T-90. Leopards are a better option than Abrams.

“The ex-invaded Eastern European countries, including Ukraine, had been under Russian occupation for decades... they lived through hell under forced Russian/Soviet communist rule.”

>>>>>>

Indeed, let me explain :

I was talking in general about the Soviet Union tyranny in the Eastern European countries occupied and/or ruled from the Kremlin, they all were forced to become part the Warsaw Pact. All those countries lived through hell during Soviet occupation. It’s not a secret. You know that too, I’m sure.

Surely, Ukraine wasn’t part of the Warsaw Pact per se, but they lived through horrific tyranny under Soviet rule. The Soviets treated Ukrainians like slaves and around 1931 killed 5 millions of them during the HOLODOMOR (death by starvation).

Also, the Soviet Union integrated Ukraine BY FORCE in 1922.
Ukraine has been the region in the entire geographical Europe that has suffered the most under Soviet-communist rule, by far.

Today, Ukraine don’t want to be ruled by the Kremlin madhouse again! Logical right?

Sad indeed... !

We should all be anti-soviets and wake up against Kremlins

Ukrainians weren’t the only people starved to death during the holodomor.
And Ukraine was part of USSR from the start (1922) to finish (1989)

Catch up bro… the “Soviets” have been defunct for 34 years, and using the word Soviets interchangeably with Russians is nonsensical.
Ukraine is part of that original sin (communism) and is equally culpable.

Let these two ex commie countries have their boarder squabble… IDGAF.

Your are technically right but in reality you talk about a smokescreen. If you look at the “realpolitik”, what you said above is obsolete.

It’s like saying that the USA is a democracy... it is not!
America is a Constitutional Republic. No less and no more.

The fact that the word Soviet Union was replaced by the word “Russia” is just “cosmetics”... in reality that doesn’t mean the old Soviet “modus operandi” has changed in any way.

Putin was a deep state KGB guy. The KGB (now FSB.. another amusing word-replacement) has always been functioning according to the Soviet algorithm.

Putin often talks about his nostalgia about the Soviet Union. It tells alot.

Also, just look who are “Russias” friends today... yes... the usual commie suspects: North Korea, China, Cuba, Venezuela... and the ultra pro Russian radical islamic countries : IRAN, Chechnya (these two are co belligerent with Russia in its invasion of Ukraine war.

Russia is clearly aligned with the other commie nations of the world...
So yes... the good old Soviet mentality is indeed what is still ruling the Kremlin, as we speak. It’s a fact.

Russia may have adopted a capitalistic economy, but their internal “modus operandi” is still absolutely Soviet-style in nature. The Kremlin acts like a deep-state machine : journalist have to be pro government in Russia, or they will be arrested, or have an accident falling out from a window / 7th floor is usually enough. True political opposition is forbidden. Russias prisons are full of political prisoners. Also, Russia still has this habit of annexing by force neighboring sovereign countries. Just like the Soviet period.

Or look at China, they decided to accept and use capitalism as a weapon against the West. But China is still deeply communist.

Russia is still deeply “Soviet”.

It’s also pretty much how it was under the Tsars.

Before the NKVD and the KGB was the Okhrana.

It’s party true yes.
Thats why “Russia” or “Soviet-Union” to me is about the same thing.
