We already lost Germany as an ally, at least below the superficial official level among the public. Germany, among all European nations, dislikes America the most.

When Obama in 2013 was caught bugging Chancellor Merkel's phone we lost some of our relationship to Germany although the damage was minimized on both sides of the issue by the left-wing media that was deeply in love with Obama.

Not so Trump. The media in Germany hates Trump no less then the media in America hates Trump and the effect on the public in Germany is palpable.

My German neighbors are sending me German emails and articles telling me that America is the cause of the Ukraine war and we are the agency which will destroy the planet. These people seemed not to notice that the origin of all these complaints comes from leftists, more properly described as flat out communists but who are camouflaged in green.

Sir,
On your topic of the Germans not liking us. Frankly, I don’t give a beaver wood structure. Germany has taken advantage of US policy and protection for way too long. Economically, every American has been hurt by Germany and its policies, especially under Merkel. Strategically, they have become a money sink for all of NATO. To say Germany hasn’t pulled its weight militarily, is an understatement of epic proportions. They have spent their money and resources on making themselves more economically competitive and on further social programs. The don’t send tanks to Ukraine, because they don’t actually build tanks for protection, they just sell them, and they don’t have enough inventory to protect themselves. German demilitarization has been a model for other European nations to forgo promises of money to NATO, leaving Americans to carry the water. Further, German dependence on foreign energy, especially Russia IS THE PRIMARY REASON for the war in Ukraine. The pipelines, the newest oil fields, the strategic importance, the risk of Ukrainian oil undercutting Russian oil and gas, is far more of a Russian motivation for war than the other mentioning things.

IMHO, Germany is primarily responsible for the war in Ukraine. If Germany had not been irresponsible and/or listened to Trump, there would likely be no Ukraine war. The propaganda, and Goebels would be proud, that your German friends are hearing is an attempt to absolve them mentally of the complete irresponsibility and betrayal they as a people have done.

How's it going, NB? I'm not surprised about the correspondence from your German neighbors. It appears little has changed since 1980, towards the end of my tour in Germany.

I lived in a small town, Traben-Trarbach, along the Mosel River, from 78-81. During the 1980 elections, my neighbors pleaded with me to vote for Carter, they were sure that Reagan would start WWIII.

I dined at the neighborhood gasthaus at least twice a week, and the debate went on for a couple of months. By then, my German was good enough, that I explained my support for Reagan in their language. RR had been my governor for 8 years, and his portfolio contained hundreds of speeches and public appearances.

It was EASY to rebuff my neighbors' utterances. The major thrust of my arguments were that the world is a safer place when America is strong. Reagan was just the man to make America stronger.

Checkmate arrived on Inauguration Day, when the Iranian hostages landed at Ramstein AB. On my next visit to the gasthaus, I was invited to sit at the stammtisch, an honor I cherish to this day.

As a sidenote, I used this to great effect during our Battalion ARTEP. As the S-4, I put together a hellacious resupply plan (mostly fictional) should our supply lines get cut. We had a wide operational area, defending 3 NATO airbases, probably 1200 square miles.

The Chief Evaluator didn't appreciate my imagination (though that's exactly what my Battalion Commander wanted). After my briefing, he comes up to me, saying "where the HELL did you come up with that?"

I said, "Colonel, I understand your objections, so let me illustrate it's efficacy by taking you to one of the gasthauses that I've actually coordinated with, and I'll buy you dinner there."

Before he could answer, my best friend, the A Battery Commander said to him, "you don't want to do that, sir. Whenever he dines there, he sits at the stammtisch." LOL, little was said after that...the Old Man was laughing, too.
