“of course, only when they’re not president. When a Republican is president, it’s never a problem...”
He’s not wrong. For Republicans, “cutting spending” is a campaign issue, nothing more.

The best government is a Republican Congress and a Democratic President. The Republicans are actually motivated to cut some spending
Otherwise, we act like Brian Kemp is in charge.

It actually is possible to reduce the deficit.
Every single tax cut including trumps has net increased government revenue.
If spending growth were set below revenue growth deficits would decline.
In fact a healthy attrition of the federal government could be established in a cycle of virtuous tax cuts.
Lest anyone think this is a fantasy, Texas has a $33 billion dollar surplus. The legislature only meets every other year.

Republicans only had the first two years of Trump’s term. They wouldn’t do what he wanted to do as they hated him and were wanting for the Russia hoax to turn out to be TRUE. Unfortunately it was in no time that he got scammed into agreeing to omnibus spending and Pelosi beat him up over shutting down government.
Spending was definitely one area Trump’s outsider status harmed his ability to govern effectively.
