The current variant is laying waste to China. Their numbers have been quoted low, the article is correct, but the reason why . . . they have it wrong. China Covid deaths are not be labeled that because they have a strict requirement of total respiratory failure to get labeled Covid.
The current variant is no longer killing via low blood oxygen. It is attacking the heart and kidneys. Organ failure of these does not qualify for the statistic.
There is confirmation of this in Japan. They are experiencing their highest Covid death counts of the 2+ years of the virus. But they have almost no ventilator use. It is not killing via respiratory failure.
There is a very preliminary study out of Japan showing no predominance of these variant deaths among vaxed vs unvaxed. The current variant doesn’t seem to care.
