In 1992 I was at Roanoke Airport in the middle of the night waiting on thunderstorms to pass. On the tarmac I noticed a half dozen CNN News trucks. I also noticed they has US Government tags. I asked one of the crew about why they had government tags?

The guy chuckled and said "It's rather self explanatory"

The storms rolled thru and I loaded up with fuel and departed. Roanoke is like landing inside a fish bowl. At night you have to make a circling departure to clear the mountains all around the airport.

When I was a student pilot, my flight instructor sent me there once on a long cross-country. He also sent me to Falwell Field, near Lynchburg.

Guy had kind of a malicious sense of humor. Fortunately, a Cessna 150 has a very slow approach speed and there's plenty of time to correct for pilot error! :-)
