A burglar received a surprise when a Chicago homeowner caught him in the act and then held him at swordpoint until police arrived.
Prosecutors said the victim left home in the 5900 block of South Honore to run some errands on Monday. When he opened the garage door upon returning, a stranger was inside.
The victim “grabbed a sword and restrained the defendant” until police arrived, Assistant State’s Attorney Paul Sloan said during a bail hearing for the accused man, Eric Smith, on Tuesday.
Chicago police officers placed Smith, 55, into custody after allegedly finding the victim’s power tools in a basket on his bicycle.
Sloan said Smith was convicted of burglary in 2020 and 2014. He also has six earlier convictions for narcotics-related felonies.
Judge Maryam Ahmad ordered Smith to pay a $1,000 deposit toward bail to go home.
Smith was hospitalized after being arrested for an unrelated health condition, officials said. His mugshot is not available.
Surprising the homeowner was not arrested. After all it’s not really the burglar’s fault because society made him do it.
“Avast, or I will run thee through, thou staunch villain!”
Or something like that.

Six felonies and 2 burglaries? He should not have been on the street much less given bail!
I thought he was arrested for home invasion and attempted robbery, not for some unspecified "health condition" ... heh-heh!
Nothing about those pictures surprises me.
Was the homeowner’s name “Butch Coolidge” by any chance?

Two comments:
1. 5900 S. Honore is NOT in a good neighborhood. Very high crime, murder/burglary/carjacking neighborhood;
2. When's our Governor Fatass JB Prickster going to pass an Assault Sword bill?
And yet, under Illinois new "SAFE-T" law, he's probably already out of jail on an eye bond and the chances of him returning on his own is somewhere between slim and none. Nor will a warrant for his arrest be followed up on since CPD is grossly undermanned and they'll simply wait for him to be re-arrested and detained (if he's found at all.)
Was it an assault sword?
Evidently had a SOID - Sword Owners ID card - or they’d h#ve arrested him.
Lol! Context people, context lol
Was there a Corvette inside?
The perp was likely a known ne'er do well!
keep and bare arms means swords machetes’ too
Don’t bring a bicycle to a sword fight.
