AirJet’s solid-state cooling could radically improve tomorrow’s laptops

The AirJet has the potential to absolutely revolutionize the way we build thin-and-light laptops, or maybe even computers in general.

For a long, long time, PCs have been chasing the idea of “no moving parts” as a platonic ideal for efficiency and reliability. And for just as long, active cooling has been an impediment to this goal: for high-powered electronics, you just can’t beat a fan and moving air for cooling stuff down. Or can you? Frore Systems’ AirJet is a radical solid-state approach to active cooling, and Gordon has the scoop at CES 2023. . . . . .

The “magic” of AirJet is a combination of exotic materials, geometry, and physics: the 2.8mm chip has cavities in the top full of vibrating membranes, which blast cool air across the heat spreader underneath, cooling down a CPU or other component. Despite the miniscule dimensions, the AirJet can send individual air particles whooshing over the heat spreader at up to 200 kilometers per hour.

Vibrating membrane.. not solid state.

It’s a flat lung. Not revolutionary.

Now a tubular peltier... we’re talking real advancement.

Certainly seems like a huge advance over a blower for low current, miniaturized, active heat transfer. What is MTBF? I didn’t catch that. Certainly better than fans with cheap bearings.

“…the 2.8mm chip has cavities in the top full of vibrating membranes,…”

Sounds like moving parts to me…

Vibrating elements have been produced in MEMS for a long time but they’ve typically been aimed at micro motors or something that produces force. This is quite clever in that it only requires movement of air molecules and uses a large number of elements working in parallel to do that. It’s kind of the reverse of a MEMS microphone where air vibrations produce an electrical output in a piezo element.

If they would put a geranium diode in there it would double in capacity.

“...cavities in the top full of vibrating membranes...”

A high-pitched whine to bother men and dogs, or too high for both to hear?

Air jet?

If it's anything like the Bed Jet, that thing is invaluable!
Hehehe, No kidding, that Bed Jet is the best thing that happened to sleep since the Sleep Number bed.

And no, I do NOT work for 'em...
