I chose to go the route of the mini 14 because I like wood stocked rifles. Fun to shoot and very little recoil.
They ignore the 9MM handgun, the favorite weapon of gangbangers and criminals. More people are killed with a 9MM than an AR of any type.
Most people purchase an AR to protect themselves from people with 9mm’s.

I was on a grand jury for three months. Every day we dealt with at least three handgun crimes. Over those 90 days we had a single rifle charge.
Yeah…in my personal experience 9mm handguns are much, much more dangerous.
