What should you wear to work if you’re nonbinary?

What should you wear to work if you’re nonbinary?

It may not be the most pressing question that gender-nonconforming people face on the job, but with approximately 1.2 million LGBTQ+ Americans identifying as nonbinary, employers and employees alike are exploring what professional attire can look like.

“I think people treat me with more dignity when I dress more masculinely, but people are way nicer to me when I dress more femininely,” said El Layla Johnson, 33, a former restaurant server who is now a therapist.

For Johnson, getting dressed for work has been a struggle since adolescence.

“I just feel like there’s a manual or rule book that people receive and that my copy got lost in the mail,” Johnson said.

Johnson recalled regularly crying while getting dressed for work at an upscale restaurant in Seattle. It wasn’t just that they found the restaurant’s dress code to be ugly. Johnson had a hard time finding clothes that fit at all.

I wish that was me, still sleeping!

Good morning!

Did you have a good night?

I don’t feel like going this morning, but I will.

It’s 45° so I changed the top I’m wearing to one slightly thicker, though hopefully, I won’t be standing out in the rain too long while I’m waiting for my ride. It will be 50° when we get out of church, and that’s still far too cold for me.

FS and PW brought me a half-gallon of milk yesterday, though I only asked for a quart. I can’t get through a half-gallon before it goes sour. I was totally unprepared: PW gave me an enormous hug! The smell didn’t seem to bother her at all! Though I’m sure, on the way home from church, she’ll roll her window at least part-way down. Bless her heart.

I wonder what PW wants from you that allowed her to overcome her “allergy.”

I hope you have a great time at church, regardless of the weather and the drivers. It’s sunny here, but kind of cold. Maybe it will be warm by the time we go to church.

Tom the Son signed the lease at the slum apartment yesterday. Woo-hoo! I’m not sure exactly when the move will take place. There’s discussion about the landlord’s replacing the bathroom floor while we’re at the beach, the week of May 14.

My thoughts exactly.

Can't decide if that's good or bad. I have to leave 15 minutes early today, and for some reason I have had the shakes most of the morning.

Anyway, I'll see you when I get back and can make an extended comment.

Best wishes for a great service!

I planted some zucchini and a row of carrots. Zucchini was a great success last year, while carrots were a failure, but every year is another year!

I’m out of beet seeds, but we’re talking about going to the hardware store after church. We need more mulch for the front flowerbeds.

Thanks!

It was good. I sat beside a woman who recently lost her husband to Alzheimer’s. She knows everyone in the ward a lot better than she knows me, but she sat by me twice — in the chapel and in the Relief Society room. I felt honored.

PW had on a purple top today. As did I. She was “happy” to see me. And bragged about the purse she made yesterday. It really is a nice purse. And the right size.

Maybe she’s happy that I’m leaving. Maybe that’s why she’s being so nice to me. ;o]

I hope your carrots come up this year. Did you get more beet seeds?

I’m probably an very odd person but I like zucchini bread and I like fried zucchini. Maybe, once I get moved, I’ll buy some zucchini and make some bread. Just for me, though. Most people around me will have their own supply!

But the beets will also be on the menu!

Asuncion’s daughter had her baby yesterday. Difficult pregnancy, and everyone is relieved that it concluded with a healthy baby and the mother in reasonably good condition.

Mass went well. Rocio and Marco were honored on the 44th anniversary.

Off to the hardware store as soon as I change my shoes. Beet seeds are on the list!

I’m glad you had a nice time and that PW is being pleasant for whatever reason!

I’m glad Asuncion’s daughter and baby are doing well. The new mom must be very tired. I hope G-Ma is relieved and happy.

Hooray for beet seeds! Beets are at the top of my vegetable list, right next to asparagus. We’re talking childhood tastes, here. My favorite fruits are peaches, followed closely by apricots, and then raspberries.

Any time PW is being pleasant, “for whatever reason,” I’ll take it. She doesn’t have to like me, but she could at least be civil. I’m not holding my breath because there is still time between now and my departure. I’ll just take each encounter as it comes.

I’m going to try my luck at sleeping, but I may be back way before it’s time to get up. You know how it goes...

Anyway, it’s been a quiet afternoon. I didn’t even turn the TV on to watch another episode of DiP. My neck has been giving me fits in this weather and all I want to do is get parallel to the deck so it doesn’t hurt any more.

I was given a graduation invitation today and when I took it out of the envelope, I said, “Oh, look! They printed it upside down!” For some reason, Roy thought that was the funniest thing he’d ever heard!

*That’s alright, folks. I’m here every Tuesday night. After Bingo.*

Quite clever. It took me a second to figure it out.

I planted a row of beets. The green bean seeds say to soak them over night, so I’m doing that.

We have asparagus plants. They produce two or three stalks a day, this time of year.

Thanks! The line between the asterisks is from DiP, when Chris Marshall’s character Humphrey is trying to get Catherine to laugh at one of his jokes. (It was just so fitting...)

I don’t know why I’m awake when I want so badly to sleep. I think it’s because of the way PW is acting towards me, lately. I’m on my guard, and I hope I don’t drop it. She’ll know and I’ll be sorry.

I love when fresh cooked green beans squeak in your mouth!

Asparagus will just keep growing. It used to grow along the ditch bank when I was a very short person. Mother would send me out with a paring knife to cut some. I thought it was a lot, but my hands, like the rest of me, were five years old and couldn’t hold much. So I had to make several trips and then she came out and got enough to fill her apron.

Funny how that popped up. I need to put it in my journal!

Done with the washing part of the laundry, but the hanging part will have to wait for a while. I’m going to have a nap before I tackle that!

Sleep was iffy. I woke up at O-dark-45 and figured I may as well just get up. So I did. This is me, almost ready to go back to bed — as soon as it warms up a little.
