What should you wear to work if you’re nonbinary?

It may not be the most pressing question that gender-nonconforming people face on the job, but with approximately 1.2 million LGBTQ+ Americans identifying as nonbinary, employers and employees alike are exploring what professional attire can look like.

“I think people treat me with more dignity when I dress more masculinely, but people are way nicer to me when I dress more femininely,” said El Layla Johnson, 33, a former restaurant server who is now a therapist.

For Johnson, getting dressed for work has been a struggle since adolescence.

“I just feel like there’s a manual or rule book that people receive and that my copy got lost in the mail,” Johnson said.

Johnson recalled regularly crying while getting dressed for work at an upscale restaurant in Seattle. It wasn’t just that they found the restaurant’s dress code to be ugly. Johnson had a hard time finding clothes that fit at all.

Nothing from FS so far. He’s going to drive into PA and get the rest of the parts for the VW he bought two weeks ago. It’s a 3.5 hour drive one way. I don’t worry about his capabilities, but I do worry about the Other Guys on the road.

I think I’m going to try and get the movie index finished today and then shred the papers that are waiting for shredding and file the ones that are waiting to be put into the drawers.

I purged the files around Christmas, since it has been a year since that was done, but I haven’t gotten to the shredding part. I’m just trying to think of things I can do sitting down.

Choir went well. DP and the kids are going to the gym. I’ll find something else to do.

Tonight, DP and I are going to a Dinner Theater production at the Town Hall. It’s a “road show” from the drama company in Matthews, which is a little closer to Charlotte. It will be fun no matter how good or bad the performance is, just because it’s different!

I asked James if he would be opening the doors at the Town Hall tonight, but he says he isn’t doing that again until Wednesday. Work at the parks will pick up in about a month, but he needs more hours at something.
