What should you wear to work if you’re nonbinary?
It may not be the most pressing question that gender-nonconforming people face on the job, but with approximately 1.2 million LGBTQ+ Americans identifying as nonbinary, employers and employees alike are exploring what professional attire can look like.
“I think people treat me with more dignity when I dress more masculinely, but people are way nicer to me when I dress more femininely,” said El Layla Johnson, 33, a former restaurant server who is now a therapist.
For Johnson, getting dressed for work has been a struggle since adolescence.
“I just feel like there’s a manual or rule book that people receive and that my copy got lost in the mail,” Johnson said.
Johnson recalled regularly crying while getting dressed for work at an upscale restaurant in Seattle. It wasn’t just that they found the restaurant’s dress code to be ugly. Johnson had a hard time finding clothes that fit at all.

I’ve looked up some formulae for that on the Interwebs. I haven’t convinced myself to start using it - let alone buying it from somewhere.
I’m not even sure I’ve seen it.
...I’ll be the only one without a Real Job!
That makes two of us! I've been wanting a real job since I was forced to retire. I wanted the pay checks, but I also wanted to work with the friends I had made. Then I got sick, had to quit, and suddenly, the pay checks were gone and so were the "friends." Go figger.
Anyway, you're in good company! I mean, think of the trouble we can get into, now! ;o]
w00t!
Mothering is the original real job.
Mowing the lawn? Or moving the lawn?
Hiya, Rob’t!
How’s things?
:o])
Mowing. Epic Fail would have trouble moving the lawn. Neighbors might not like it, too.
Back from Walmart. There are a couple of things I’ll have to get at Harris Teeter, but they’re not urgent. If all goes well, the adult men won’t have any excuse to go to Costco.
Oh, golly! Thinking of the adult men going to Costco is scary!
Charlie's letter is out in the damp mail box, waiting. The starlings were out in force and it was still raining when I went out. I need to send an email to Chuck and one to my FD.
She said there is to be an announcement at work on Monday. Apparently, there was some sort of blow-up between the owner and one of the doctors recently. I told my daughter, "What a way to kill a weekend." She said that was her exact response, as well.
All she can do is relax. We’re about to go to Envirothon. It appears it will not rain until after we get home, which is nice.
The adult men buy their special food and canned beverages at Costco, which is fine. It’s not fine that they buy random other stuff and then expect me to produce meals out of it. I have resolved that part.
Yep. It is what it is, and she’ll have to deal with it one way or another.
The grocks were delivered, and I got them late enough this time to get a rotisserie chicken, though it was obviously refrigerated before it ever got to me. Maybe from yesterday. So I boned it and put it into bags and stuck them in the freezer.
I noticed a couple of places weren’t quite done, but that just means I’ll have to make sure they’re heated before I use them in anything. Now, of course, my mouth wants some corn chowder with chicken in it! Maybe I’ll whomp it together for Sunday dinner.
For now, I’m going to be sitting down. The pain is present.
Good luck and have fun at Envirothon!
We had a nice time. Reviewed some tests, walked around and identified some trees. Now I just need to get supper in the oven and salads over to church for the homeless dinner.
Got any aces?
It’s still a-thunder-storming away, out there. It’s gone from gloomy to bleak, but that’s probably because the sun is in the lower quadrant of the sky.
Tomorrow is another day, and maybe I’ll see the sun for a few minutes. (I can always hope!)
Good luck at the homeless dinner! Are you providing the music again?
No, just the salad. I sent Vlad to drop it off.
Supper finished and cleaned up. Now I can have a shower. Tom and Vlad are going to Your Local Game Store to play Magic. Frank is pouting because they won’t take him, but he’s had a long day and shouldn’t stay up until after 10:00.
I just watched the first three episodes of the new season of Death in Paradise.
Some things never get old, but some get a new twist. For a while, I was having a little deja vu, but I guess I’ll have to wait till the last episode to find out if that’s a thing or not.
Anyway, I’m going to take my last dose of pills for the night, yay me, and hope I sleep.
I hope you have a great Friday night!
The doorbell rang just as I was dropping off to sleep. No one there.
Life is weird.
I’ll listen to an uplifting talk and then go back to bed.
That is very true!
Nice job!
