Maybe they were misplaced. Its likely not a big deal...excepting the hypocrisy of going all out after Trump .

Question to Mr. Sauber: Why did he have and what was he doing with classified documents on the first place, since he had absolutely no legal reason to have these?
I’ve said before, DOJ does active investigations for two reasons:
one is to look for process crimes against political enemies
the other is to investigate how widespread a political scandal is, find out how knows what, put a fence around it - then suppress it.
this is the latter.
The defense is: No mens rae.

It is a defense against espionage charges. Not against ‘mishandling of classified documents’.

Exactly! I seem to recall a young sailor that “inadvertently” posted some pics taken inside a nuc sub....and he got time in the brig... I have some familiarity with handling of classified docs (USAFSS), and this cover up is rotten. Cover up is worse than the crime.

The president must avoid even the appearance of doing wrong and keeping a trove of secret government documents in the boot of a Duesenberg - even in a car port - does not meet the test.
Try using that defense as an E5 or a GS 7/9/11
