The Toyoda family started Toyota. They either didn't like the sound or they thought it sounded unlucky and inauspicious, so they changed the company's name.
If you want something to startle you, how about this?

The Toyoda family started Toyota. They changed the name from Toyoda to Toyota so it would not seem to be a "family" business, which I've heard was considered not a good thing in Japan, decades ago. I've also heard that "Toyoda" and "Toyota" sound more different in Japanese than they do in English.

Actually, the last character in their family name can be read either "TA" (always read that way at the beginning) or "DA" (usually read that way at the end, but plenty of exceptions).
Either way, it means rice paddy, the mark of a farm family name. In the old days, farmers were just one rung below the Samurai on the hierarchical ladder.
