NEWQUAY, England, Jan 9 (Reuters) - Britain's attempt to become the first European nation to launch satellites into space ended in bitter disappointment early on Tuesday when Virgin Orbit said its rocket had suffered an anomaly that prevented it from reaching orbit.

The "horizontal launch" mission had left from the coastal town of Newquay in southwest England, with Virgin's LauncherOne rocket carried under the wing of a modified Boeing 747 called "Cosmic Girl"...

...Virgin Orbit had initially said on Twitter that LauncherOne had reached earth orbit, a tweet it later deleted.

Anyone who would put their shiny new satellite on Branson’s rocket instead of Elon’s would have to have their head up their exhaust plume.

Well as long as the team had the requisite number of women and minorities I don’t see a problem here…

Posting that link did not work for me either. Failure to launch in both cases. I think the indistinction in the headline refers to the launch from Europe, assuming you do not include former USSR republics to be part of Europe. Because of it’s high latitude Europe is disadvantaged for launch satellites into orbit.

When they said "Sideways Launch", this is the first thing that came to mind

There’s some glitch here on FR that does not include the closed parentheses “)” for some reason in the link. You’ll have to add it to the URL.

Russians launched from high latitudes and used a slant launch rather than initially vertical. I do not know if latitude has something to do with it.

“LauncherOne” is kind of a wimpy name for a rocket. Shoulda gone with “Big Johnson”.
