Or set said fan up to come on automatically whenever combustion is detected? Seems simple enough to "be made safe" to me.

I’ve lived in a house with a gas stove, gas hot water heater and a gas furnace for all my life of 72 years. No respiratory problems in myself or family. These people are full of shit.
