Our neighbors on our street both 2 had accidental fentanyl poisoning. The one neighbor had a 20-something son who was living at home. The mom found a folded up piece of tin foil under the dresser. Inside was barely a trace of powder. Being children of the 70's she touched it to her tongue to see what it was? 25 minutes later her breathing stopped after she sat down feeling tired. Fortunately she was visiting another neighbor at the time her breathing stopped. The ambulance crew did CPR and bag ventilated her to the hospital. The next neighbor is a clerk at city hall. She picked up a baggie off the floor of the elevator and put it in the trash. She was on her way to lunch with coworkers. In the middle of lunch she felt dizzy and nauseous. She then collaped and the medics hit her with narcan to revive her. She didn't wash her hands after picking up the bag in the elevator and then eating a sandwich with her hands.

Apparently a first time exposure to fentanyl can kill you. Even trace amounts.

Drug abusers who’ve survived their first exposure or who started on weaker opioids, will build up some tolerance and take more to kill. The innocent have no such tolerance. The amount of heroin or other older, weaker opioids needed to kill was less likely to be taken accidentally.
