A new weight loss drug could become the best-selling drug of all time. Who can afford it?

An Eli Lilly drug if approved for weight loss could become the best-selling drug of all time, but concerns are mounting about who will actually be able to afford it.

Experts are confident that the drug, called tirzepatide, will be granted approval by the Food and Drug Administration sometime next year. If that’s the case, it would join two other popular — and expensive — recently approved weight loss drugs on the market, Wegovy and Saxenda, both from the drugmaker Novo Nordisk.

Annual sales of tirzepatide could hit a record $48 billion, according to an estimate from Bank of America analyst Geoff Meacham. Another Wall Street analyst, Colin Bristow at UBS, estimated the drug would reach $25 billion in annual sales — a figure that would still surpass the record $20.7 billion set by AbbVie’s rheumatoid arthritis drug Humira in 2021.

Kelly Smith, a spokesperson for Eli Lilly, declined to comment on what tirzepatide will cost. Outside experts said it is possible the drugmaker could price it similarly to Wegovy, which carries a list price of around $1,500 for a month’s supply, and Saxenda, which costs about $1,350 for a month’s supply.

If the FDA confirms the drug’s effectiveness, a “fair” price for tirzepatide could be around $13,000 annually, or around $1,100 a month, said Dr. David Rind, the chief medical officer for the Institute for Clinical and Economic Review, a research group that helps determine fair prices for drugs.

Here is how this will go down. The overweight community will scream racist unless the insurance companies and gov covers the cost of this drug. That means that my insurance premiums and taxes will go up to cover the huge cost. This will become a big-ticket item real soon.

After watching my 600lb life I have discovered that there is no such thing as a person who is unable to lose weight. Every single person who is put in a hospital and is not given outside food loses weight at a very rapid pace. This pill will be for the lazy and we will probably discover it has horrible long term effects.

Imagine eating healthy, exercising, and taking personal accountability…

I truly despise our society.

“simply stop shoving food down your throat!!!

Kind of like abortion...keep your pants zipped or use birth control...But we all know who pays for that mess.

” This pill will be for the lazy and we will probably discover it has horrible long term effects.”

You nailed it. Methinks your statement has a roughly 99% chance of becoming fact.

People don’t need drugs to lose weight.

They need to eat right, which for a great many people means restricting carbs.

And they need to get out and move. Not just gym membership. Get outside and do yard work and walk places. Park at the far end of the parking lot when safe and feasible. Walk to do errands when possible.

Absolutely correct. Bottom line, burn off more calories than you take in, you lose weight.

It takes only willpower which is severely lacking in much of the American populace.

That show could gag a maggot. I'm astounded when I see a morbidly obese person getting delivery pizzas, spaghetti, and what not, all delivered at once, several of each. And they start chowing ravenously down until mass quantities are consumed.

I've got to hand it do that doctor though. He doesn't take any BS. They all lie about how much they have eaten between appointments. He won't perform bariatric surgery unless he is convinced the patient is determined to change her life. The scales don't lie.

I am continually amazed at the number of overweight people who choose the elevator over the stairs in a 4 story office building.
