Police said they began tracking and surveilling Kohberger around Christmas and stayed on him for four days when they spotted the white Hyundai Elantra they believed was connected to the murders.
Investigators said Kohberger drove cross-country in the car to his parents home in Albrightsville, Pennsylvania.
His car was confirmed to be at the Pennsylvania home, and officials worked quickly to obtain a warrant for his arrest, law enforcement sources told CNN.
Along with the surprised bar owner, students who attended Washington State University with Kohberger said they were shocked to learn that the quiet man in their classroom was the prime suspect in the brutal slaying.
Friday's arrest is the first major break in the case - with Kohberger asking if 'anyone else was arrested' when he was taken into custody. An extradition hearing is scheduled for Tuesday.
Kohberger is a registered Libertarian, although does not appear to have had any active social media profiles at the time of his arrest.
During a press conference on Friday authorities confirmed that a white Hyundai Elantra was discovered in the search – with sources saying it was towed from outside Kohberger's home.
Law enforcement sources told CNN that his DNA was discovered at the scene of the crime – with officers managing to track down who owned the car seen in the area of the slayings.
However, Kohberger has no prior arrests, according to public records, so it is unclear how officials got hold of his DNA.

ROFL. Excellent.
Intriguing that he was a PhD student in criminology though.
Its going to somehow be even more sickening if he did this just to try out a crime.
First thing I did was check to see if any of my DNA mtaches Ancestry and 23andme had the surname Kohberger. Thankfully no. If you want to help the police crack cold cases make sure to build a accurate family tree that is attached to your Sample. I have a 60,000+ family tree on Ancestry
Well he’s certainly raised the attention of the Criminal Investigation units dealing with these types of murders and the criminal commiting them. So yes it is intriguing for now.
But I tnd to think he had some issues with the people or girls there and simply acted.....though likely planned.
Too late. My brother did one and even after we die, his daughter and her offspring can be traced back. Like someone else said, it helps narrow down the search.
His blood could have left drops outside—certainly a good place for forensic serologists to start their analyzing regimens.
The DNA on file could have been his sisters’!
Also thinking he might have put the Reddit message asking for criminals to respond for his research, when he was actually looking for a murder accomplice.
Makes sense! Very sad.
That is absolutely true, however, working in healthcare as I do, my first inclination is that a healthcare facility, functioning in a Constitutional Republic under the rule of law and penalty, must abide by patient confidentiality as outlined in HIPAA regulations.
So, even if you sign that Treatment Consent form that all patients must by law sign before getting healthcare, and there is microscopic text (which many never read) that announces the medical team can do anything with your tissue or blood that they wish, they are still bound by HIPAA law not to reveal your personal data.
So, even if they did want to develop a DNA kind of thing, sell your DNA to some researcher or drug company, or use your blood as a control in some large scale study or...whatever, they still could not reveal who you are.
That is according to laws passed by a legal government, conforming to the guidelines of the Constitutional Republic.
When The Constitution is being ignored-there is no penalty (except focused for political prosecutions or gross negligence that cannot be ignored) for dissemination of patient data, including name and DNA information.
And it is my contention we no longer live in a Constitutional Republic bounded by the rule of law.
We live in an oligarchy in which anything is possible if it benefits someone politically or financially.
So in that sense, that there may be healthcare institutions, enforcement agencies, or individual politicians that are enticed in some fashion (money, blackmail, who knows) into giving information by channels both public and non-public, legal or illegal, you could be absolutely correct, 4Liberty.
Hell, for all any of us knows, it could be right there in the open, printed for all to see somewhere in that 70,000 pages of the Federal Registry. It could even be part of that 1.7 Trillion Dollar omnibus bill that was just passed.
How would we know? Who has read the whole thing? Who even cared to?
If he had been anywhere near the capitol building on January 6, 2021, it wouldn’t have taken four days. Maybe one. Maybe hours.
“And it is my contention we no longer live in a Constitutional Republic bounded by the rule of law.
We live in an oligarchy in which anything is possible if it benefits someone politically or financially.”
That’s the money quote.
Skin under any dead person’s fingernails would have his DNA, if they scratched him.
Wasn’t it reported one of the young ladies put up a fight?
Argh. It sure does bother me that I have arrived at that conclusion after all these years.
I really dislike even hearing myself say that.
But what other conclusions can any observant person come to?
THE ROAD....
Cannibal Zombies...
I’d say it’s 👍 Good but
One of the darkest.
It’s the truth I see. We just hate to say so.
I’m a Veteran, but I wouldn’t serve today.
Our country is truly declining in many facets.
I’ll watch.
I posted the other day that, I no longer view the military as the staunchest ally of our liberty.
Because I grew up in the military as a brat and served, I felt like I had a pulse of the kind of people generally who served in the military, men like my father, like me, like my best friend who joined with me...I would trust people like that with my liberty.
I know there are some, perhaps many who are still there and still fit that mold, but I fear there are far more of them, especially at the flag ranks, who will do the bidding of whoever is in charge, as long as it is a Leftist.
It should be the Constitution that tells them what to do, in the end, and I simply don’t feel sanguine about which way the US military would now go.
And that is a deep knife to the patriot in my heart, to hear myself say that. Fortunately, from my various discussions with veterans like you and others, on and off FR, I have found I am not alone in this sentiment.
You are so right.
