Could eco-terrorists be behind the attacks on America’s power stations?
New York Post ^ | December 29, 2022 | Steven F. Hayward

Rolling blackouts during the recent cold wave has raised concern about the reliability of our electricity grid, but the growing possibility of deliberate sabotage may be a bigger threat.

The first sign America’s electricity grid might have become a target occurred in 2013, when a marksman disabled an electricity substation south of San Jose with more than a hundred long-range shots reportedly from a .50-caliber rifle. This was no casual prank or random act of vandalism. It was clearly planned, and the damage required nearly a month to repair.

At the time the FBI downplayed the incident, saying publicly that it didn’t think it was terrorist-related.

The mystery deepened with a series of Christmas Day attacks this year on two electricity substations in Washington state that led to blackouts for thousands of customers. Local authorities thought the attack was perhaps part of a burglary — thieves sometimes target electric-utility facilities for their valuable copper and other materials with a high black-market value — but there was a telling detail in the news stories on the incident: The local utility had received prior warning of a possible attack from “federal law enforcement officials.”

Which federal law-enforcement officials might those be?

In January a Department of Homeland Security report concluded that “extremist groups” had developed “credible, specific plans” to attack the grid. The report didn’t single out any particular group or motivation, saying a spectrum of extreme ideologies could have embraced the cause. According to one estimate, there have been more than 100 attacks on the grid this year.

The FBI has a long history of monitoring and infiltrating extremist groups and understandably remains tight-lipped about which groups it has under active surveillance.

“All the earmarks”? What are ANY of the “earmarks of a Russian operation”?”

Hell if I know, but they make a good enemy to blame everything on, including Hunter’s Laptop.

[...more than a hundred long-range shots reportedly from a .50-caliber]

No one notice a .50 going off repeatedly for 10-15 min., maybe longer?

Interesting, I listened to a guy who used to work for the DHS explain it was 10 different rifles, SKS’s they determined, firing over 1000 rounds at the cooling fins to disable two transformers in South San Jose. Said they could tell by the shells left it was 10 different rifles. He also said video inside picked up someone cutting the communications cable just before the attack happened. Can’t remember the name of this guy who I heard speak, it was a youtube thing, the guy was speaking about that one and the outage in SoCal, electronic attack at a power substation in Baker, Ca. I think it was? So back to San Jose, the guy said there is a shooting range close by. I’ve never seen one over there and I’ve to South San Jose many times. But that was the “excuse” why no one called in about the gunfire. I wish I remembered that speakers name.

You made a very direct analysis that these “have all the earmarks of a Russian operation.”

It was a single short sentence, why is that your analysis?

“It was a single short sentence, why is that your analysis?”

Because Russia is taking out power plants in Ukraine, and Russia has been interfering in US elections since Trump decided to run - hence it must be a Russian operation. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if 51 former intelligence agents claim the same.

If you don’t accept that rationale, then you must be a Putin supporter.

That was a goofy post, it explained nothing about why you think these attacks “have all the earmarks of a Russian operation”.

Eco terrorists are nothing new. Back in the 80’s these nutjobs were setting fire to car dealerships to destroy the evil SUV’s. Burning tires, oil and gasoline. Go figure.

What is different is back then they were fringe operations. I would bet that now they have some strong backing by federal operators.

Well, the eco types want us all to embrace electric, and frankly, forcing heat pumps on people in colder climates IS a form of eco-terrorism. The only way a heatpump is feasible in, say, Buffalo would be if there was a fossil fuel back up, or a geothermal installation (which needs a yard, leaving the poor literally out in the cold).

I’m wondering if this isn’t simply regular terrorism snuck in over our southern border from somewhere else? First attack was not that far from San Francisco rather than in a purple state during a non-lethal heatwave or coldsnap, which lets out an attempt to demonstrate that electric won’t work as a be-all end-all.

I’ll bet this is related to all those attempts out there to shut down the internet by cutting wires out there in California, as well as some deliberately set wildfires. Terrorism is the goal I think, making peoples lives unpredictable and making them feel powerless, in this case literally.

Your posts are getting sillier.

Your posting history shows that you believe that Russia is attacking our power stations and that “Payback’s a bitch.”

What “earmarks” are you seeing that tell you these are attacks on America by Russia?

That one or more incidents were caused that way, I have no doubt. But on the whole.....no.

Can’t say as I’d be agreeable with whoever the gov’t. puts the blame on either. We’ll have to just wait and see

I suspect an FBI operation designed to tar “the right” and pave the way for a wave of arrests. I notice that the FBI is finally interested in an attack on a church, they’re offering a $10,000 reward for info on the vandals that hit MLK’s church in Atlanta.

I think this shows that somebody has noticed that the FBI doesn’t show people like Comey the door, and instead promotes them! What do you want to make a bet that when the dust eventually settles there will be someone at the bottom of it all using Whitey Bulgers playbook?!
