Suspect in Killings of 4 University of Idaho Students Arrested in Pennsylvania: Sources
TV Channel 4 New York - NBC Universal ^ | December 30, 2022 | Anon

A 25-year-old man has been arrested in Pennsylvania in connection with the stabbing deaths of four University of Idaho students whose bodies were found in a rental home near campus last month, multiple law enforcement sources with direct knowledge of the investigation said Friday.

It marks the first major break in a case that has both captivated and mystified the globe.

The sources said the man was apprehended in the Scranton area Friday morning. Authorities are expected to hold a news conference on the case later Friday.

Few details have been released publicly in the gruesome Nov. 13 slayings of 21-year-olds Madison Mogen and Kaylee Goncalves, and 20-year-olds Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin. The four friends, members of the university’s Greek system, were discovered across the street from campus, leaving the small town of Moscow, Idaho, deeply shaken. Relatively few details have been released about the homicides, intensifying the mystery.

The Moscow Police Department has said it was working through nearly 12,000 tips in an effort to solve the case.

Do we know if he was arrested for the murders or for being “connected” to the murders?

A white Hyundai Elantra was seized from the Pennsylvania property where Idaho murder suspect Bryan Kohberger was taken into custody, according to reports.

Mr Kohberger is a PHD criminology student at Washington State University , which is around 10 miles from the scene of the crime.

They probably checked GPS records of cell phones that went to the house between 3 and 4 for less than an hour. Deep deep gumshoe stuff.”

If that was the case, then why seven weeks to make an arrest? My guess is that the white Hyundai is the key.

Both the U of I and WSU are very close to the ID-WA border: within a few miles. So, the 2 universities are quite close to each other.

My guess is that when LEO searched for the owner of a white 2013 Hyundai, they checked with campus police for the University of Iowa and Washington State University, who have a database of the name of every student who has a permit to park on campus, as well as the year, make, model, and license plate of the vehicle. They then learned that the owner of a vehicle matching that description was a PhD student in criminology at WSU, and that peaked their interest (like a fireman who sets fires). LEO then found his photo on the WSU website and witnesses or surveillance video matched the photo to someone who was at the Corner Club on one or more occasions, including the night of the murders. LEO then searched the suspect's office at WSU and found a coffee cup, pen, or some other item that contained a DNA sample, which they matched to DNA found at the crime scene. I would like to know whether the suspect stayed in the area after the murders or immediately headed east. If he suddenly disappeared, that would raise further suspicions.

If he’s the perp then this likely wasn’t his first violent act, you would think he would have some prior acts but may not have been connected to those by previous investigators.

Also would say if he is the guy, he’s no Einstein to have held on to that car, sooner or later the FBI would track down all 25,000 of them as reported earlier, and it would be fairly simple to eliminate 99.9% of them. Here’s somebody from the area and if there were 25,000 such cars nation-wide then the number in eastern WA and northern ID would likely not be much greater than 25. You would obviously start with those 25 before paying a lot of attention to cars in Texas or Florida. That of course assumes that his driver’s licence or car ownership data had any mention of Pullman WA and not PA. But there would be other overlaps.

You are right. Then the police asked people with any knowledge of the car to contact their tip line.

My son in law does investigative work on complex cases.

The shear amount of data they have to sift through is staggering. And that is when they are looking at “known” individuals; they went through this stuff not even knowing what they were looking for.

They probably knew who this guy was for a while. Tracking him down probably took a couple weeks.

Someone on TV said they heard him ask,” have you arrested anyone else”.

I had every confidence in the police. They took a lot of undeserved flack. Perp coming back to Idaho for trial, I think. Does ID have the death penalty? No number of appeals would save this monster’s life.

Those are excellent guesses on how the investigation evolved He probably immediately left the northwest and drove east. By the time they identified that white Hyundai as the suspicious car, he was long gone.

You’d think that with the license plate number, they would have been able to track the car through myriad cameras across the country. Perhaps being a PhD criminology student, he used a fake plate or covered it up.

If all those pieces fit together, you have to wonder why it took 47 days to arrest him. Apparently he was holed up in a very remote part of the Pocono Mountains in PA. Maybe he had a good hide-out all that time.

They may not have had a license plate number — speeding car at night.

Does ID have the death penalty?

Yes, but they've only executed three people since the Supreme Court reinstated it in 1976.

This guy needs to be the fourth.
