That’s the way Rome did it.

The Army went Woke and Fag. I would not make it 5 minutes in the service today. Everyone in vicinity would be constantly offended at me.

They talk about their “standards”, HA!
If you are breathing and have an IQ of 70 or above you are welcome to join up.

These people are always around, like Ted Williams brother. He managed to be dishonorably discharged in 1943, at the height of WW@. How? He would just go AWOL at every opportunity, 14 charges in a 12 month period. When he was on duty he would refuse to obey orders by just doing what he pleased. Constantly found hiding in a closet or in the woods sleeping. He never cared. Had no trouble finding one job after another during the war and afterwards worked a scam moving back and forth from the SW to Massachusetts. He would pile up debt in Arizona and just disappear for New England and then do the reverse in a few months. Complete worthless human being. Ted Williams ended up paying all his hospital bills when he came down with adult leukemia and his funeral and burial expenses. Some family members griped because Ted Williams wasn’t ‘warm’ towards his con artist brother.

Project 100,000 was about the only real way to get people to get in at all and it helped the count but was not related exactly to the criminal court recommendations.

As I’m sure you remember the 60’s were plagued with misinformation about the problems in ‘Nam (or even the reason we went in), and with the information of the craziness and deaths there they couldn’t get any manpower to go. Guys like your entry displayed were not the ones you needed to depend on in a firefight or to accomplish tasks that were designed to keep you alive let alone safe.

Officially entrance requirements were loosened, but all the Project 100,000 men were sent through normal training programs with other recruits, and performance standards thus were the same for everyone. And if anyone buys that then they may want to look at the differences between mens’ and womens’ PFT requirements and call that equal, also. They were only equal to their capacity, not there accomplishments of minimum standards or even those of their job and expectation toward it. Same with the jail bird escapees only one group was incapable due to their mental levels and the other one was trying to stay out of jail.

So which one is worse, the one incapable of comprehending mistakes or the one that intentionally does them as a DGAS attitude putting in time? You can adjust for one over short lengths of time. The other one’s adjustment is planning for the criminal to do the worst scenario and not be trusted at all. Great choice wasn’t it?

Entrance requirements were loosened, but all the Project 100,000 men were sent through normal training programs with other recruits, and performance standards thus were the same for everyone.[10] The US Army received 71% of recruits, followed by 10% by the Marines, 10% by the Navy, and 9% by the Air Force.[1]

While that project was geared to low income, low IQ and uneducated it pretty well took anything that walked.

I was in the 11th grade and a few of us did the usual weekend entertainment in '66, joyriding (in cars other than our own of course). Ended up in front of a juvenile court judge and was given the choice of the day for us hardened criminal teenage types. He did send me to a juvie holding center (called juvenile hall for some reason back then, it did not mimic study hall or any hall though) to grow up my last few tender young months and then loaded me up on an Army bus headed to basic training the day of my 17th birthday right after swearing in.

As noted, we were sent thru normal training programs, all integrated with younguns like me and the old men of 20 or so. Don't remember running across any non english speakers or IQ challenged. Physically challenged wise, basic weeded the unhealthy out pretty quickly.

Only thing I remember getting age related was a bit of ribbing of babyface, the youngun, junior etc., but that came from the guys, not from command. Pretty well a normal 3 year hitch from what I could see along with all the others.

And still the brass in DC refuses to understand why no one with any sense wants to be in the military. (Retired Field Grade Army Officer)

Bryan Kohberger sure bears a disturbing resemblance to Warren Jeffs.

The difference is that now a motivated and patriotic soldier is seen as the problem.

One of the things not discussed widely is the number of 15-17 year olds who simply stopped going to school during Covid shut downs. Many of those kids would get courtesy graduations and roll into the military.

Many of those kids were the target market for military recruiters. But…now that cohort didn’t graduate high school…which was a pretty solid requirement.

So, the standards get lowered and they get the same kids they would have gotten anyway.

This is a direct result of COVID policies.

I was active in Boston area sports for a while. From what I heard anecdotally, Ted wasn’t real warm towards anyone. Neither were Carl or Larry.

I guess it’s kind of a thing in Boston. (I’ve witnessed first hand the coldness of Carl and Larry.)

I have a relative in the navy with an undergrad degree in engineering who blew the ASVAB away and he refused the jab. They have lied to him repeatedly: you’re being discharged, you’re not being discharged, withdraw your religious objections request and will discharge you, your being discharged on this date to be told a couple of days before you’re not. He went in under Trump and loved the navy but now he hates the woke BS and doesn’t believe anything his officers tell him. He’s counting the days until his enlistment is up and would never consider re-upping no matter what they offered him because he has no faith in anything they say to him at this point.

I served in a meritocracy as a Navy officer during Vietnam. My chiefs were part of the Greatest Generation with service from the Battle of the Coral Sea to Okinawa.

I would never recommend anyone I know serve now, but then I don’t associate with the LGBQT-whatever crowd and their supporters. The services should now rely on these people. Obama made sure any officers who did not support that agenda left.

Thanks for relating the personal experience. I’m not surprised at all by that. It’s no wonder all branches are having horrible recruitment problems.

Thanks for your service, Mike. As a butterbar platoon leader, my most valuable guidance came from my 3 Platoon Sergeants, all who had at least one tour in Nam. In garrison, they ran the show. Once we left the motor pool, it was showtime for me, and I reveled in it.

Couldn't understand why so many didn't rise to the occasion. I was having the time of my life, and my soldiers fed off of that.

Now, the Courtney Massengales are doing their best to run off the few Sam Damons remaining. I aspired to be Sam, but that was a high bar to reach.
