I found this video fascinating. Knowles goes into the difference between the previous school of acting, where people “acted like” the characters, and the more recent school, where the actors tried to “become” the character.
While I see the difference and think that the more recent school does come out with a more natural result, Knowles explanation of what the actors are doing to themselves and the philosophy implicit in this behavior explains a lot, like why actors seem to be so crazy and changeable (numerous divorces, rampant substance abuse,, suicides, etc.).
And he talks about the fact that the idea that we can turn ourselves into whatever we want to be has spread into society outside acting, and from what I can see is spread through sayings such as fake it til you make it, you can accomplish whatever you set your mind to, etc.
We have lost all sense of limits and of individual needs, we are interchangeable.
