Tesla used car price bubble pops, weighs on new car demand

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Tesla buyers who waited months for their new car have had an unusual choice for much of the past two years: keep the new electric vehicle, or sell it at a profit to someone with less patience.

But the days of the Tesla flip are numbered - a potential threat to new car prices that are already getting cut.

Prices of used Teslas are falling faster than those of other carmakers and the clean-energy status symbols are languishing in dealer lots longer, industry data provided to Reuters showed.

The average price for a used Tesla in November was $55,754, down 17% from a July peak of $67,297. The overall used car market posted a 4% drop during that period, according to Edmunds data. The used Teslas were in dealer inventory for 50 days on average in November, compared with 38 days for all used cars.

Tesla last week doubled a U.S. new-car price cut to $7,500 for Model Ys and Model 3s delivered this year, adding to investor jitters about softening demand.

Nearly a third of used Teslas for sale in August were 2022 models up for resale, a sign that original buyers were aiming to flip, analysts said. That compares with about 5% of other brands on the used market, research firm Edmunds said.

“You can't sell your current Tesla for more money than you paid for it, which was true for a lot of the past two years," said Karl Brauer, executive analyst at car sales website iSeeCars.com. "That would reduce demand for new Teslas."

LOL...

Maybe all the stories of the “Green” energy revolution being impossible are hitting home?

Maybe the shortages and sky-high prices of natural gas and gasoline have people realizing the “Green” energy revolution is all smoke and mirrors?

Maybe all the reports of cold weather crappy range and charging failures are having an effect?

Maybe people are waking up the “Green” energy and “climate change” scams?

Batteries catching fire and burning occupants to death, as well as automated crashes, tend to downgrade the market too.

Been seeing used teslas on dealership lots lately.....guess they finally found out what that new battery is gonna cost.

But never fear, the EV bros will be along directly to tell us how this is a good thing.

Tesla’s Vehicle Fire Data provided for the period 2012-2020 reveals that there has been about one vehicle fire for every 205 million miles traveled.

That’s over 10-times higher than the average distance between fires than in the case of the national average of 19 million miles in the U.S., according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and U.S. Department of Transportation.

It’s also not cool among the dimwit glitterati to own a Tesla now because Elon Musk is most definitely not one of their tribe anymore.

For them, Musk and everything he stands for must be destroyed at all costs, facts be damned, as if facts ever meant anything to them anyway.

Maybe EVs going up like bottle rockets have woken them from their slumber.

Maybe the inevitable replacement cost of batteries (now that some are bound to be failing) are turning people off.

Maybe the extraordinary weight is a factor.

In addition to your maybes. Maybe.

Those are excellent additional “maybes.”

Whole lot of “maybes” that people are maybe finally pondering about the reality of this bogus crapola they’ve been fed.

Market demand for battery electrics, both new and used, will be affected by the growing pushback by multi-family dwellings (condos and apartments). This is where the fuel-cell cars and light trucks are more attractive, assuming infrastructure in place (which there is damn little).

Speaking of H2, I've seen arguments that H2 makes more sense for semi tractors and railroad engines. Particularly as infrastructure would be easier to build at highway truck stops and railroad yards. Tesla may have been a tad premature, although I'm sure that Musk could pivot quite quickly. (Already planned? Wouldn't be surprised.)

Don't you hate it when the most blatant of the cult beats you to the punch? It's almost like it exists solely to be an irritant.

That said, recent prices for Teslas on bringatrailer argue otherwise about prices. Granted, not a lot sell through that venue. Perhaps short supply is the reason but what do I know as I loathe the things.

Google stranded Tesla… it seems as though they can “remove your car” from the app and your sitting. There were great articles on extending your range by being towed.
Iirc.. you don’t 100 percent own a Tesla. You can buy, drive and sell it, but there was verbiage about it in the original Tesla contract.
I haven’t seen a contract since the early years, maybe they removed it.
Stranded, fires, being deleted.. it all adds up to can’t you count on it? The answer would seem to be no.
