Russia in Afghanistan was our proxy war where Russia had troops getting killed on the ground, and we were opposing them by proxy -- similar to Ukraine. That proxy war begat Osama Bin Laden, Al Kaeda, and a direct attack on United States soil.

No, the reason 9/11 happened was because we sent US troops into Saudi Arabia, and kept them there to deter Saddam's further aggression. That is the specific actuon that set off Al Q, and why 9/11 happened.
It wasn't support for the mujaheddin that caused 9/11.
