Nazi ‘Secretary of Evil,’ 97, sentenced for role in more than 10K deaths

A former Nazi concentration camp typist known as the “Secretary of Evil” has been convicted by a German court for her role in more than 10,000 murders during the Holocaust.

Irmgard Furchner, 97, was found guilty on Tuesday of complicity in the deaths of 10,505 people at Stutthof, the internment camp near Gdansk, Poland, where she served as a typist and stenographer from 1943 through 1945, BBC reported.

Furchner, who was tried as a juvenile because she was under 21 when she worked at the camp, was sentenced to a two-year suspended prison term.

Although Furchner’s lawyers repeatedly denied she had knowledge of the Nazi regime’s atrocities, Judge Dominik Gross at Itzehoe Regional Court in northern Germany ruled that she was aware of the camp’s murderous intentions.

After several months of judicial proceedings that were initially delayed by her attempt to escape in September 2021, Furchner broke her silence on her time at Stutthof earlier this month.

A 97-year-old tried as a juvenile?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Well, there had to be a reason why her face was blurred out, no?
I thought it was just that her face was worn out after so many years.
She was a secretary not an officer or even guard. Just tack on the word murderer to anything. Rosevelt knew, do you want to convict him?
97 wow. Took long enough.
A lot quicker than the trials of anyone involved in the Communist genocides of the 20th century. Their murdering began in the late 1910s and we're still waiting for the trials to begin.
Can the conviction of a pin-boy at a Nazi bowling alley be far behind?
Rosevelt knew, do you want to convict him?“
Roosevelt had many faults, laying the foundations for socialism is his biggest.
But he wasn’t keeping records in a Nazi death camp.
Again I’m not totally sure how I feel about what to do with this woman.
She wasn’t directly doing the killing.
Meanwhile in the the US, we are holding people accountable for slavery who never owned any slaves, nor did their ancestors, but simply have the same skin tone as those who did.
Roosevelt had a lot more power than she did. He could have done more pre-war on immigration. He could have bombed the railroads during the war. He could have put pressure on neutrals like the Swiss. What is a secretary going to do?
Blaming FDR for the Holocaust is just silly, and I’m no FDR fan. FDR, if he could, probably would have declared War on Germany once they invaded Poland, but there was no way he had the support for it from the electorate, nor from Congress.
Two-years, suspended. Good grief, was the judge an American or something?
“Blaming FDR for the Holocaust is just silly”
Not near as silly as blaming, and convicting, a secretary.
In hindsight yes. There was a tremendous amount going on , and the flow of information back then wasn’t precise .
We were much more concerned with beating Japan than beating Hitler.
