I experienced that type of turbulence in the fifties over the Gulf when Hurricane Audrey was approching. A stewardess was buckled in crying. A military pilot was throwing up. I was pregnant trying to miscarry, holding a 2 year old and in pure paralyzed shock. Reading that article, I was lucky to have held on to my 2 year old.

I’ve seen people plastered to the roof of the cabin several times.
Always sets lap belt
I was on a 747 that dropped about 10000 feet over the pacific
It was a real mess

On top of your bad weather, that’s when the Lockheed Electras and de Havilland Comets were falling out of the skies with structural failures.
