With inflation, labor shortages and supply chain issues, the prices of common goods are soaring. But if you’ve noticed that the price of lettuce in Bay Area grocery stores is rising too, it’s actually mostly because of a totally different reason

There last lettuce was harvested in the Salinas Valley was on November 1. All lettuce now is coming out of the desert or Mexico. Production is low because of the lowest mean temperatures in the last 50 years. So much for global warming

Honestly I stopped buying lettuce.
Three different times the packaged salad fixings (Spring Garden, Veggie Mixture, types of names) were recalled——twice including those with a serial number on the bag I had at home.
The lettuce used in Wendy’s burgers in MI and OH actually linked to e.coli hospitalizations—including the Wendy’s 2.5 miles from my home (and I ate one the week before but didn’t get sick, thank goodness).
And head lettuce also recalled from my local supermarkets here.
So, no thanks to lettuce for me for at least a year or so.
Too stressful.
They have been trying to invent a machine that harvests lettuce but are unable to invent one that poops in the field while cutting it.

My wife prefers Romaine but it has been really crappy and nasty dirty for a while...I still get the occasional head of Iceberg for small salads as it’s not as nasty and easier to clean. The quality and size is down but I don’t use much these days.
