Sam Bankman-Fried’s esteemed Stanford parents face their own reckoning
San Jose Mercury News ^ | December 14, 2022 | Martha Ross

As Joe Bankman and Barbara Fried sat in a Bahamian courtroom Tuesday, the popular Stanford law professors had to be worried about more than whether their FTX founder son, Sam Bankman-Fried, will go to prison for orchestrating what a federal prosecutor described as “one of the biggest financial frauds in American history.”

The couple also have to be concerned about their own legal jeopardy, a criminal law expert said, given reports that they were involved, at some level, in their son’s efforts to build his allegedly fraudulent cryptocurrency exchange into a $32 billion business. They face scrutiny on multiple fronts over whether they were complicit in the alleged crimes that led to the company’s spectacular collapse.

“I can’t imagine a world where Bankman-Fried’s parents were not his financial and legal advisors,” said Matthew Barhoma, a criminal defense and appellate attorney who is based in Los Angeles.

It could get especially ugly for the couple, who are accustomed to a privileged life in high-minded academia. If prosecutors and the FBI want to play hardball, they could try to force Bankman and Fried to cooperate with the investigation and to testify against their beloved son …

Waiting for him to claim this is performance art. I kind of like how he made celebrities look like idiots. But no that other stuff.

Good job! I guess I'm a slow starter … :)

The parents sound like real hyper privileged A-holes. In the immortal words of Dick Cheney: "Big time!"

Sammy Bankster Fried siphoned some few hundred millions into own “secret” accounts. I can’t wait until it is revealed how much. And his top underlings too. Bankster and top underlings got hundred million dollar “loans” out of FTX. Also by some easy peasy insider hacking in the last days of FTX. Hundreds of millions were taken.

My opinion is that all this skulduggery n thievery will be uncovered. Though it will take 12 months of detective work. Aka forensic accounting/

What surprised me how blatant it all was. Their company had a chat group called “wire fraud”!

Bernie Maddoff was old school and managed to keep his scam running for over 20 years.

These youngsters nowadays ...

I'm friends with a CPA who does forensic accounting work. No matter how clever your are, you can run but can't hide. There are too many hooks in the system that will unravel the financial threads.

lolzz and agree 100%. Perhaps Sammy Bankster and his cohorts figured they would be immune to prosecution. Due to the mega donations to Democrats. The top FedGov man there, who runs FTX now to try to unravel and make investors whole again. Even if it's ten cents on the dollar. He said this is a case of embezzlement, and not very sophisticated embezzlement.

His jive lefty parents inspired at least 30% of Sammy’s criminality, and fraud. So these Stanford law perfessors, his parents, get some blame. Plus, maybe they got some illicit millions too out of FTX.

Criminals must do crimes in haste and confusion. Uncompromised investigators have time and months on their side, to figure it all out.

When did it occur to the family that they aren’t part of the protected class? I’m going to guess after all of the donations.

And I have less than no sympathy when the elitists wrongdoings catch up with them and it’s payback time.

I hope these two parents do not have one moment’s peace anywhere they go in the world from this moment forward. They created this man child, they helped create this fraud. They need to never ever ever have a single minutes peace anywhere they go in public from this moment forward.

Sam grew up in a hyper-privileged household. All his life he was completely certain he could get away with anything. I think this was why he didn’t escape to Hong Kong or somewhere safe when he had the chance.

His parents are the ones who taught him about being privileged, they aided and abetted his whole scheme. All 3 of them are just absolutely astounded that they may be going to prison.

Actually I prefer his ‘power-couple’ Leftist parents doing some hard time. Could care less about the brat - if people were dumb enough to entrust the brat with their money, with no insurance, then they deserve what they’re getting.
