Patriot Missile-Defense Systems Would Be Legitimate Target, Kremlin Says

MOSCOW—The Kremlin said that U.S. Patriot missile-defense systems would be a legitimate target if supplied to Ukraine, signaling that Russia doesn’t intend to cease its military offensive even in the face of superior weaponry.

U.S. officials this week said Washington was finalizing plans to provide Ukraine with the highly advanced weaponry that would significantly boost its air-defense capabilities, following months of Russian missile and drone attacks on the country’s power grid, cities and civilian infrastructure.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters Wednesday that the coveted missile- defense batteries would absolutely be fair game for a strike, but added that he would rather not comment further until there was official information on the matter, as opposed to media reports, which he described as unreliable.

Mr. Peskov was responding to a question on whether he agreed with comments made last month by Russia’s Security Council deputy chairman, Dmitry Medvedev, that the delivery of such systems to Ukraine would “immediately become a legitimate target for Russia’s armed forces.”

If the Biden administration moves forward with a decision, which could come as early as this week, the Patriots would be the most sophisticated system the U.S. has provided Ukraine since Russia invaded its smaller neighbor in February.

Frustrated by battlefield setbacks, Russia has increasingly reverted to targeting Ukraine’s civilian infrastructure, primarily using Iranian-made drones. On Wednesday, Ukrainian air defenses repelled a wave of Russian strikes in Kyiv, knocking at least 13 drones out of the sky, with explosions reported in the historical center of the city, according to Ukrainian officials.

yes, now vs. later at a time chosen by the US, aimed at crimea most likely.

i realize many people want to reduce this to a comic book event but there are very complex trends and actions working themselves out over years that led to this.

a 3 million dollar missile per shot, to shoot down a 20 thousand dollar drone.

Highly effective if the object of the exercise is not to shoot down a $20K drone, but to transfer $3M from the taxpayer to the MIC.

Indeed, that would be excellent work for some of the Ukrainian refugees in Poland, etc.

Liking your pro-Ukie recent commentary. I will always be mystified by American conservatives cheering on the Russkies. Ronald Reagan is spinning in his grave.

How many military conflicts have we engaged without Congress declaring war?

I believe the last time Congress declared war was in April, 1942 against Bulgaria, Hungary, and Romania. So to answer your question, too many for me to count.

However, Congress has voted approval of warlike actions several times since then. Even some dems are going to have a problem if FJB puts American boots on the ground in Ukraine.

Not missing it at all; you put yourself in the middle of a war with a weapons system, you should expect to be targeted and killed.

WHY DO US TROOPS HAVE TO TRAIN UKRAINIANS IN UKRAIN, WHY NOT NEVADA; lots of missile ranges there.

Nope; Putin knew that SENILE/BRAINDEAD BIDEN was a weak, corrupt, stupid, feckless, senile, worthless pile of shit and decided he would rather do it now than wait for a REAL PRESIDENT to be elected (if ever again)!

As the old saying goes “STRIKE WHILE THE IRON IS HOT”.

So what does it say about the “2nd army in the world” that when it invaded a country which is led by a “homosexual jewish nazi” (you side’s characterization of Zelensky) and backed by a country led by “weak, corrupt, stupid, feckless, senile, worthless pile of shit” Biden (this is where you and I mostly agree), it’s getting chewed to bits? If putin is such a master strategist, why is his blyatskrieg taking years not weeks, why did russia have to mobilize 300,000 additional packets of cannon meat (with an equal number of russian men fleeing the country to avoid conscription), why is his Black Sea flagship sunk by a country with no navy, etc.?

Russia had Europe addicted to its oil and gas, plenty of German and French politicians in its pocket, and the world scared of its military. Now the Nordstream pipelines are scrap metal at the bottom of the Baltic, Finland with its 1,350-kilometer land border with russia has joined NATO, and Turkey has emerged as the regional heavyweight. Any links of ‘slavic unity’ between Ukraine and russia are permanently severed. Ukraine will be integrated into the EU, and probably into NATO as well. Russia is facing at least a generation of sanctions and reparations before it will fully rejoin the world community. Great victory, da?

Lastly, why are you shouting at everyone in this thread? Tabbing the Caps-lock key only makes your arguments sound even more unhinged.

Three cheers for nuclear world war. We need another global crisis for global reset. Crisis is a terrible thing to waste

What Russia-Ukraine war has proven is that era of conventional boot-on-the-ground warfare is over.

Technology has made it obsolete and unwinnable.

America learnt it in Vietnam and Afghanistan.

If this war is dragged out, it will likely end up as nuclear war. May be that is the end game of neo-cons.

Those who cheer it will own it

Because we want our people killed to drag us into the war, or at least gain more support from us towards Ukraine.
People in charge, the world over, are complete trash.

The only people cheering for nuclear war are putin’s propagandists (Solovyev, Simonyan, etc.)

Kaiser Wilhem told Woodrow Wilson: “If you keep shipping arms to the allies on big ships like the Luisitania, Germany may decide to sink some of those big ships. They would be legitimate targets.”

Yeah, that worked out great for the Kaiser.

It was the same choice that JFK had regarding nuclear missiles in Cuba.   President Putin had a Hobson's choice.

Ukraine was never any threat to russia (other than showing ordinary russians it was possible for a slavic people to live in a normal country and not under a kleptocracy). Your comparison is invalid. Hitler's annexation of the Sudetenland is more apt. Or in pedestrian terms, "Ukraine's skirt was so short, russia was forced to rape her..."
