There are a multitude of geophysical variables that affect the environment on earth. And as you pointed out, they play out over very long periods of time. We don’t know or understand how they all work and/or interact to influence the earth’s temperatures. Yet, certain governing precincts suggest that this process is sufficiently understood to make predictions and policies that effect entire continents.
Back in the 1970s climate scientists were predicting that the Earth was cooling. The politicals always need a campaign of some type to invoke fear in people so they can control them. If it isn’t global warming it will be something else to manipulate the folks.
Note that the norm is glacial, with relatively brief warm periods, and the transition from warm to glacial can happen quickly.
