Despite arguments for or against each side, this war/conflict, as with many others in history, was avoidable.
And that was and is what is truly trollish.
The only one there in danger of a wrecked military is Russia. Europe and the U.S. are both getting the world's best possible field testing of all our new technology. And, when Russia has beaten itself into submission by trying to conquer Ukraine, Europe and the U.S. will be free to commit that many more resources to address China because Russia will no longer be a conventional threat.

There was never any “goal” to take over Ukraine.

Realistically, the worst case scenario for Russia is that it gets thrown completely out of Ukraine, which puts it right back at the borders it had until 2014. It would have no problem continue to exist at that size, just as it basically from 1991-2014.
That's not an existential threat. That's just a threat to dreams of hegemony. An existential threat to Russia exists only within their own propaganda.
